Time to grow!

Yesterday was my birthday. For me, that always means a day when I reflect on my life...where I've been, where I'm going, what I most want to improve on, etc. When I was in my 20's, I really just wanted to feel like and be seen as "an adult." In my 30's I was overwhelmed by the BUSYNESS of life...having babies, running a business...I hardly even HAVE memories of my 30's, I was so busy just trying to get through each day. I kept giving birth to new humans and collecting more STUFF. Now that I'm in my 40's, I'm starting to look at all of that STUFF as a weight on my shoulders, a load I'm anxious to lessen. I also realize that BUSY isn't necessarily a good thing. If there is no time in your life to sit in your backyard and spend a lazy hour in a hammock, or take a walk with your mother, or go on a quick day trip with "the girls", then what's the point of doing all of that work, really?

I'm starting to realize...not just in theory, but on a very visceral level...that it's TIME and PEOPLE as well as the LEGACY I might some day leave behind that are far more important than the house I live in or the material possessions I collect. I've talked several time about trying to find balance...that elusive balance that allows me to be PRESENT in my children's lives, focus on personal goals, and still run a business I can be proud of. I'll be honest, I haven't done a very good job of striking that balance yet. It's gotten better, but the balance is still tipped pretty heavily toward WORK and my home and family have consistently gotten the short end of the stick.

This year I've done more professional growth activities than in any other year I've been in business. I've gone to several workshops, met with other professionals from across the country, and joined a national group of photographers that support and challenge each other to become better photographers and business owners. As a result, I'm VERY excited about the direction my photography has taken. I feel more creative and alive than I have in a very long time.

It's interesting, though, because all of this professional growth has also made me take a long, hard look at my personal priorities. I've started entertaining the notion of making some VERY big changes in my life. It's made me realize that if I'm not happy with the lack of time I'm spending with my family and the lack of progress toward my personal/life goals, then I have to be willing to change....really change.

I can't say too much about it, because nothing has been decided and there are still many, many variables to consider, but let's just say that I think the next couple of years will hold some big moves...not away from photography or even out of the Lincoln market, but very possibly back to my roots. Those of you who know me well might have an inkling of the direction that might take. The rest of you can watch the story unfold!

Dancers/Athletes...time to fly!

Remember that big flour mess that I made last month? Yeah, that mess is still there, waiting to be cleaned up! With the hustle and bustle of May...a workshop in Chicago, getting my kids' school yearbook designed and distributed, another workshop in Omaha, and then graduation parties...I just didn't have time to follow through on planning and marketing the flour sessions the way I wanted to. So I set aside 4 days in June that are JUST for flour. THEN I'm going to clean it all up once and for all!!

I've created a special pricing structure just for this week geared more towards groups of friends to help make the up front cost more manageable for more people, because I LOVE these sessions and want to make them available to as many people as possible. Here's the scoop on FLOUR WEEK:

Thursday, June 4th through Sunday, June 7th
All day (schedule will be built as individuals and groups contact me)
Session fee: $100 per hour. This session fee can be split among friends, so the more dancers/athletes you bring, the lower your session fee per person. I recommend no more than 4-5 people per hour to allow everyone time to get their turns, but you can reserve multiple hours if you have a larger group.
This is NOT just for dance pictures! Any ACTIVE sport with motion and impact is a candidate for FLOUR pictures...dance, gymnastics, cheer and ball sports will all work!

SUNSHINE Session Special...ONE TIME OFFER!

To celebrate the beginning of summer and...hopefully...the return of sunshine, I'm offering a ONE TIME ONLY special offer for 30-minute sessions. Our most popular session length, our 30-minute mini-sessions are perfect for updating your family pictures if you have a few goals, like an updated family portrait plus some pictures of the kids together as well as some individual shots of the kids. These sessions are $500...$100 for the session fee and $400 to apply toward either your digital file order or full-service print order. However, if you call or email to book your summer or fall session by THIS Friday (May 29th), I'll waive the session fee portion completely. Play ball!

I don't have sample pictures of this EPIC idea to show you, because I haven't DONE them yet, but I have an amazing idea for BALL players that involves action, water and explosions...of a sort. Kind of like the flour pictures for dancers and gymnasts, I want to do something for ball players that is off-the-charts cool, artistic, and very technical...something you don't see everyday! I'll be trying out this idea with some members of my 2016 senior SEEN team in the next week or so, but if you're INTERESTED or INTRIGUED by the idea of water/sports/action photos and would like more information when I put these sessions together, email me to receive an invitation. I'm tentatively setting aside time on June 19th and 20th for these, and possibly another July date if all goes as planned!

Changing the Face of Beauty

I've recently been contacted by "Changing the Face of Beauty", a wonderful national movement committed to encouraging companies to include people with visual physical differences in their advertising, to work with them and provide them with images they can use on their website and other social media. I'm going to be working on some photo shoots/concept sessions this summer specifically for this organization, and I'm compiling a list of models who would be willing and interested to be a part of this. I won't charge session fees or have order requirements for inclusion in these sessions, but there may be some wardrobing or hair/makeup costs involved depending on the session or concept. If you have a child who is typically developing OR with visual phyical differences and you'd be interested in participating or learning more, please email me so I can contact you with more specific information as I plan sessions throughout the summer.
