Dealing with Errors in FileMaker
by Anders Monsen

Approaches to errors during development generally break down into two methods. Like defensive driving, the first method attempts to avoid errors from occurring. The second method attempts to deal with errors that occur and find appropriate ways to minimize the effects. Good solutions find a balance between both methods. Typically errors occur in the context of scripting through unexpected behavior, although other areas of FileMaker can result in unexpected behavior, including case statements, conditional formatting, autosizing of layout objects, charting behavior, and security. In this brief article we’ll focus on scripting errors, although the methodology applies to all areas: test all features from as many perspectives as possible. Read more….

Success Story: Hunting with Jeff

Header

Success stories are often built from something that already exists, and that’s exactly what happened when MightyData partnered with Hunting with Jeff. A few hours outside of San Antonio you’ll find Jeff Myers and his ranch. Whether it’s a company outing or a vacation, Double C Ranch provides great customer service, a luxury experience, and the chance to get some hunting done.

You’ll find Jeff behind his desk checking guests in and out, as they prepare for some fun. Before MightyData came along, his FileMaker database already connected to his website to allow hunters to register. The system also allowed for checking guests in and out, including invoicing any necessary guest expenses. But like any solution, there were improvements to be made.

MightyData has worked with Jeff in further connecting his system with QuickBooks and providing printouts for hunters and guests. During times of emergency need, like crashing computers, we’ve been able to get Jeff up and running so he can continue to run his business. Our goal has been to provide good customer service to Jeff, the way he provides a great hunting experience to his Double C Ranch guests.

Pause On Error: Recapping the “Unconference”

Header

by Martha Zink

New York City welcomed us with good weather for Pause On Error on February 17 and 18. Over 100 FileMaker developers, including two MightyData speakers, milled around the Ace Hotel, attending sessions packed with great topics and even better group discussions. As in past years, POE excelled at bringing a part of the community into one hotel and allowing developers to talk about all the things that bring us together, regardless if it’s FileMaker, business, sports, or music. Here are a few highlights.
