Proud mum swan with her Swoose

Everyone say Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Romance was clearly in the air for our resident female swan this spring. In the absence of a mate, one of our Canada geese took his chance and the result is the pictured swoose!

Apparently these are quite rare, and our youngster faces a tremendous challenge to survive through to adulthood. Mum is being most attentive with her offspring and she hisses a warning if anyone approaches too close for comfort.

If you visit us over the next few months, please approach the Lakefield with care as we'd like to give our precious baby the best chance of survival.

Dad and his best man were most protective of mum for months. So much so we've only just managed to get on the island in the Lakefield to mow!

Iris sibirica 'Papillon'

Iris time approaches...

The river of Irises at West Green House

The river of irises in The Garden of Five Bridges has just started to come into flower, with the best blooms currently found at the head of the river.

With the weather set fair over the next few days, we anticipate the thousands of unopened buds will soon burst into a spectacular display.

With a wetter winter this time around, we're expecting an even better display than last year's - shown opposite.

Rose in the walled garden

A rose is a rose is a rose

Rose portrait at West Green House

It's always a delight to see the first of the roses in bloom and this year is no exception.

June sees our ever popular workshop which celebrates the hundreds of roses at West Green House.

Your day includes top tips on rose selection and cultivation, followed by the creation of your own floral arrangement to take home, using flowers from West Green House.

Tuesday, 14th June, 11am to 3pm. Tickets are £55pp, to include lunch, garden tour and demonstration. Call us on 01252 844 611 to book your place.

The Glory of the Garden

Alan Titchmarsh

We're thrilled Alan Titchmarsh is bringing his celebration of The Glory of the Garden to West Green House as part of our season of opera and music.

From Cider with Rosie through to Tchaikovsky's The Seasons,  Alan's eclectic selection of readings and music promises to be a little different to usual, yet still based on all matters horticultural.

There are 2 performances at 3pm and 7pm, on July 27th. Why not spend a delightful afternoon in the garden, take afternoon tea prepared by our chef, and be entertained?

We have Trip Advisor success!

Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence

We've just heard Trip Advisor have again awarded West Green House their Certificate of Excellence, for 2016 this time.

Thanks to all of you who've taken the time to add your reviews and thoughts on what we do here at West Green. It's good to know we're getting things right for so many of you.

Thanks also for the many tweets, Instagram and Facebook entries you've posted on social media since we reopened in March. It's fascinating to see the garden through your eyes.

And finally...

Our shop is looking better than ever, with plenty of gorgeous spring and early summer plants lighting up the display. As well as our Hairy Pot Company regulars, our gardener Terri is doing a fine job of raising a range of plants here at West Green House.

We look forward to seeing you over the coming weeks... don't forget we're also open on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30th.
