Message from our CEO

Hello good people,

I hope this finds you all well and in good spirits.

Welcome to another Everglow newsletter.

Everglow stresses that the issues of aged care are of national importance and the Budget acknowledges this through the investments announced.

I am hoping, this Budget is the beginning, recognising that ageing in place is a better long term strategy for our aged care system.

The Federal Government handed down the 2020 Budget announcing a number of measures for aged care, most notably an additional 23,000 home care packages over the next four years.

This commitment to an extra 23,000 Home Care Packages is vital to help older Australians age at home. There are currently over 100,000 people waiting to be assigned a home care package, so as you can see this is just a fraction of what is required from the Government.

This is very important because it is important for you to be able to continue living in your own home as you age, maintaining the community connections you have made over your lifetime.

There needs to be a greater focus placed on driving down wait times for packages, which has been sadly in some cases greater than two years.

We will continue to ask the Government to continue to invest in extra packages to meet peoples’ needs and make sure they have timely support for the care they require.

While this boost to home care is valuable, there needs to further work on developing a long-term plan to reduce the wait to no more than three months.

In continuing to provide a voice for members, I sent correspondence to Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck’s office outlining that Everglow has not had an increase in our CHSP block funding for the past five years, despite being able to demonstrate increased community demand. We continue to see demand for Home Maintenance, Allied Health and Personal Care.

Without an increase in our allocation CHSP hours, we are unable to provide assistance to those in need who wish to have Everglow look after their needs.

Everglow believes there needs to be a greater focus placed on keeping people in their homes and out of Residential Aged Care for as long as possible. I continue to be concerned that Residential Aged Care is more of a focus as the long term strategy within the sector.

As always, I welcome any feedback from you in relation to your services or any opportunities for improvement.

Until next month, stay safe.

Wayne

Kurts Corner - Home Maintenance Team

Hello again all,

This month I would like to continue our discussion on pests, however this month I would like to look to our furry canine friends.

As some of you may be aware, we are coming into Parvovirus season.  Parvovirus or Parvo is a serious illness that can be fatal for both young and older dogs.  Parvo is a virus that attacks the digestive tract and bone marrow, causing discomfort eating and the inability to effectively fight infections.  While is it a fatal disease it is treatable by a Vet, at I'm sure no small cost, and as with anything the best treatment is prevention.  There are vaccines for this illness, and it is recommended, by Vets, to get annual boosters.

Unfortunately, Parvo is high contagious and is commonly passed by faeces, promptly disposing of faeces on walks to reduce environmental contamination and as part of being a responsible pet owner is one of the best ways to prevent the transference.

If you receive lawn mowing services either from us or from anyone else, lawn mowers are an easy way for the disease to be spread from house hold to house hold, meaning we may infect your four legged baby my accident so I highly encourage everyone to be proactive with this and be Tidy Kiwis and pick up the poo :).

Until next time my friends, take it easy and look after yourselves.
