Crofton House School  

Some things change, and gratefully some cherished few stay the same. December is a time for beloved traditions at CHS and within the greater community: the Carol Service, the Seasonal Social, and the Victoria Holiday Tea at The Fairmont Empress. In this edition of the 1898 alumnae newsletter, we have a look back at some of the exciting annual events that occurred in December. We also interview several alumnae who have stayed involved with the CHS community in unique and interesting ways.

Michelle Dyer ‘93: The Change Expert

 

Michelle Dyer '93 has made a career out of facilitating structured change within a wide variety of organizations -- the most recent being Best Buy Canada’s corporate offices. She recently took some time out of her busy schedule as a senior manager, active alumna, and mother to talk about the benefits of a CHS education and how it led her to where she is today.

We were fortunate enough to catch Wina Huang ‘13 when she recently dropped by the school between her very busy semesters at Columbia University. The occasion for her visit was truly remarkable: she was here to receive both the CHS Alumnae Association’s Scholastic Achievement Award and the Governor General’s Academic Medal.

Debbie Phippen ‘71: A Knack for Drawing People Together

 

Class rep Debbie Phippen '71 has been on a mission for the past few years. Using her experience as a retired federal inspections investigator, and more than a little creativity, she has managed to make contact with virtually everyone in her graduating class. She recently shared some very clever advice on how to keep the bonds strong.

4th Annual Inspiring Women Event Set to Amaze

Save The Date and get inspired! The 4th annual Inspiring Women event is slated to take place on April 9. In past years, the event has offered a very honest and lively take on some of the impressive things that Crofton House alumnae go on to accomplish. It’s also a lovely evening to socialize with old friends and connect with other members of the CHS alumnae community.

Volunteers Needed to Update CHS archives

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Crofton House School archives, and archivist Reto Tschan has put out a call for alumnae volunteers to help with a number of cataloguing projects. If you enjoy sorting through old photos and objects, and bringing order to chaos, these opportunities may be well worth considering.

The Victoria Holiday Tea at The Fairmont Empress was an occasion both festive and regal, well suited to the majestic historical venue in which it took place. Laughter and a few pointed hints of nostalgia were highlighted by some truly amazing stories shared by the school’s alumnae.

And the Winner Is…

The Alumnae Association has announced that Amy Lo, lead designer on the James Webb Space Telescope and Asian-American Engineer of the Year, has been selected for the Alumnae Association Achievement Award. Amy will be attending the School Birthday and Alumnae Association AGM on March 7, 2014 to accept her award, where she’ll be speaking to both the students and alumnae about her life and career. Look forward to an interview with this highly distinguished alumna in the March edition of the 1898!
