KIM HAS A HULL LOTTA LOVE FOR YOU!! However someone refers to you - clients, customers, or patients, you are the livelihood of Hull Dermatology and Aesthetics. You are crucial to our everyday existence and the reason we get up everyday and come to work. Whether you are coming in for a skin cancer check or simply treating yourself to a facial, we appreciate ALL of you! Our Skin Care Club allows us to really get to know our patients, since they come once a month or sometimes even more frequently. I have really formed a special bond with many of you and always look forward to our time together each
month. It is also nice to get to meet new patients that may have been referred to us or are just wanting to find a new complete skincare “home”. After all, YOU have made us the Skin Solution and we wouldn't be where we are today without you!
Sunscreen: The "Good," the "Bad," and the Downright Truth First, let's look at sunscreen vs. sunblock. Sunscreen and sunblock are both excellent forms of sun protection, just look for ones that are "broad-spectrum" meaning they protect against both UVA/UVB rays. Sunblock has a mineral base formula (Zinc and/or Titanium) that physically reflects the sun’s rays, preventing them from penetrating the skin. Sunscreen on the other hand is a chemical compound that absorbs and reduces the effects of UV wavelengths, otherwise acting like a
"screen," reducing (but not completely blocking) the effects of the sun’s harmful rays. Secondly, what's considered "good" and/or "bad" when it comes to choosing a sunscreen? An estimated 20 percent of Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetimes, making it the most common form of cancer in the country. To lower their risk, many of us turn to sunscreens like lotions and sprays - even powders - to protect our skin from the sun's effects. Wearing sunscreen regularly can lead to a 25 percent decreased rate of basal cell skin cancers. A separate study found that daily use of sunscreen reduced melanoma incidence by 50 percent. At the center of the controversy, it's easy to say to limit the
use of three ingredients: avobenzone, retinyl palmitate, and oxybenzone, which are found in chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens are the most common type of sunscreen and work by creating a layer that absorbs the sun’s rays. In other words, even a chemical that technically isn't good for us might be better than less-effective methods of sun protection. Lastly, what to choose and why? It's safe to say both physical and chemical sunscreens (SPF 30 or higher) will do a great job at protecting your skin, as long as you are applying them generously every morning and reapplying throughout the day. This is not a sales pitch! Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin and then be reapplied every two hours. Sunscreen does not "survive" for very long once
applied. It naturally starts to collapse after about only 90 minutes! This goes for ANY and EVERY sunscreen out there on the market. Things to look for: - SPF 30+ or higher
- Mineral Based Formula: Sensitive skin, babies, and/or children, great for non-athletic activities (can rub off easier because it doesn't absorb into the skin)
- Chemical Sunscreens: Good for all skin types - excluding sensitive/reactive skin - holds up to high levels of activity. Can be water-resistant (not waterproof)

NovaThreads: All About our Hottest New Treatment By: Susie Reed, RN, CANS So what is new and very popular at Hull Aesthetics right now? In one word, NovaThreads. In February of this year, we introduced an exciting procedure that complements or adds the finishing
touches to our beautiful clients. NovaThreads have quickly become one of the most sought out procedures in our practice. It is a non- invasive lunchtime treatment that provides natural results, and is another option for tightening loose and sagging skin. So what are these threads made of and how do they work?NovaThreads are composed of Polydioxanone (PDO) which is absorbable suture. It is often used in cardiothoracic surgery because it is fully absorbed within four to six months and doesn't create any scar tissue. The foreign body stimulates collagen synthesis and the skin structure created will hold for about 12 months.
No cuts or incisions. Purely injections!
NovaThreads are needles that are pre-loaded with a PDO thread. They are simply inserted underneath the skin, parallel to the surface of the skin, and when the needle is removed, the thread remains under the skin. A beautiful and healthy face has a "V-shape". With the aging of tissues and the action of gravity, this "V- shape" gets lost. The idea behind the two NovaThread techniques (described below) is to either create a scaffolding in order to support the tissues and keep them in the "V-shape", or where necessary to delicately lift the tissues and reposition the skin to recreate the "V-shape" where it’s been lost. Two types of Threads: Smooth and Barbed
NOVA-MESH Uses smooth threads to create a mesh under the skin, sort of like a # hashtag or a net. This mesh will serve as the foundation for new collagen production. This creates tightening, filling, and smoothing of the skin naturally from within over time. NOVA-LYFT Uses a barbed thread to produce a more dramatic and immediate result. These threads have "barbs" which create a grip underneath the skin and can be pulled to create an instant skin repositioning. Just like the smooth threads, the skin will then build new collagen which will secure the lift!
Best procedure for neck and jawline
Although NovaThreads can be inserted/injected almost anywhere, one area they are especially effective is the neck and jawline. The lower third of the face is challenging to treat effectively with botulinum toxin or injectable fillers, which are most effective in the upper and middle third of the face. While Botox/Dysport have no rival for treatment of lines related to muscle movement on the forehead, and dermal fillers are still the gold standard for replacing lost volume to mid face, there are often still laxity issues in the lower third of the face that cannot be corrected with non-surgical options, Botox or dermal fillers....until now. Now, we have NovaThreads to address these issues. There are many other areas of the face, neck and chest for which we use PDO threads. Non-surgical brow lift, neck
lines, and chest wrinkles are just a few other areas where we are currently using NovaThreads to battle aging. As always, we offer a complimentary consultation to discuss your concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan for you. If you are curious about new treatments and what your options are, call today to schedule (479)254-9662, Opt. 2. Also, see below for information on our NovaThreads Demo Party we are hosting, and for a great Before and After of this treatment. We look forward to working with you!
I really love to get a facial and as an Aesthetician, I also love giving them. Facials are more than a "feel-good" day at the spa. They are treatment for the skin and provide many benefits including: moisturizing the skin, reversing visible signs of aging, improving skin tone and texture, alleviating redness and sensitivity, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and reducing blemishes and breakouts. Here at Hull Aesthetics, we offer customized facials according to an individual's skin needs including those with sensitive skin and Rosacea. These facials include: Medical
Facial, Spa Facial, HydraFacial, and Acne HydraFacial. Medical/Spa Facial
Our medical or spa facials are customized and include cleansing and exfoliation; your choice of either a microdermabrasion or dermaplane; steam and extractions, if needed; facial massage; enzyme treatment; masque; lactic peel; moisturizer; and sunscreen. The Spa Facial has the same steps but longer with added massage. HydraFacial/Acne HydraFacial
Our "primo" facial is the HydraFacial. The HydraFacial is a multi-step, non-invasive treatment that detoxifies, rejuvenates, and protects your skin for immediate results and long-term benefits. The 6-step Vortex-Fusion serum delivery system exfoliates, removes dead skin cells to uncover healthy skin, and adds Glycolic/Salicylic peel. The vortex suction cleans out pores while the vortex boost addresses specific concerns such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and anti-aging. The vortex-fusion also provides antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. This facial also includes Red Light therapy that helps anti-aging, redness/irritation, and increases circulation. The Acne Hydrfacial has the same steps as the HydraFacial, minus the anti-aging serums. This facial is beneficial for pre-teens, teens, and those with adult acne.
It's great for cleaning pores including extractions, and the Gly/Sal peel helps alleviate acne. This treatment includes Blue Light therapy which kills bacteria and reduces the size of acne blemishes. All of these facials can be done every four weeks and are recommended for immediate and long-term benefits for healthy, beautiful skin. Our free skin analysis or complimentary consultation will determine your best facial.
Before she moved to our Clinical Trials division, we asked Hillary to share some of the tips she has learned over her years at our Aesthetics Reception desk. Here is part two of Hillary's Hints. You can read part one here. Something I think gets overlooked more than anything else, because of how simply basic it is, is our Microdermabrasion or Dermaplane treatments. Something I can tell you for sure is that people, no matter how much treatment patients are doing for tightening or lifting, never really seem satisfied
unless they are doing something for the surface of their skin. Exfoliation does so much for our skin! By exfoliating our skin, we are triggering cell regeneration, as well as opening up the pores to allow product to better penetrate the skin. This is by far the treatment I am most consistent with. Dermaplaning is my personal favorite and a great side effect from this treatment is the removal of excess fine hairs which can accumulate dirt and oil. Plus, as a bonus, it reduces the appearance of scarring and my makeup always looks fantastic. Whichever your preference, these exfoliation treatments go a long way, giving your skin a brighter, smoother look and feel. It is something you would schedule every four to six weeks as a great start or addition to your skin care plan. When you are taking care of the skin's surface you might find you are happier with other treatments you are doing. Something else that I make sure to do is use my product. I should have taken a lesson from my grandmother in that she has been using product since she was a teenager. She is 77 and looks amazing! All of these products do something for your skin, and knowledge is power. For example, I did not know before this job that not using a moisturizer may actually have helped contribute to my breakouts, or that I should have sunscreen on everyday even if I am not out lying in the sun. Sun exposure without it helps contribute to skin cancers and premature aging. With that being said, I have a moisturizer, toner, skin brightener, sunscreen, and Tretinoin from Obagi that I love. Most of the time this is the skin care line I stick with, because I like the way it feels, and how it makes my skin look. However, every now and then when I have the opportunity
to try something new I will. Again, this is something you would want to discuss with your provider. She will make sure that what you are using is right for your skin and treatment plan. We also have The Skin Solution store now, where you can get samples of recommended products to see how you like them before purchasing. So, if you have been waiting to see what you can do for your skin: come in, have the complimentary consultation, get the information, get started. As I have learned, skin care is like everything else - you have to take care of it, and have a routine to maintain it. It is never too early to start teaching skin care. In fact, it is worth it to know what we can do to start looking and feeling better as soon as possible. Three friendly tips: - Nothing happens overnight
- Most treatment plans take time and some treatments do require downtime
- Schedule your consult as soon as possible
BEFORE AND AFTER: NOVATHREADS
These before and after photos illustrate the difference in the jawline of Susie's patient after she used four threads on her lower face. Note the lift and correction that the patient now has. Not only does this give an immediately gratifying and pretty result, the threads are also stimulating new collagen growth.
