DDS Officials Meet with Urban Youth at LifeStream

Officials from the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDS) made a recent visit to LifeStream, Inc. to meet with members of the organization’s Urban Youth Collaborative Program (UYCP).

UYCP is a statewide program coordinated and funded by DDS which offers inner-city youths summer jobs and training to support individuals with developmental disabilities. LifeStream is the designated coordinator of the program for the New Bedford area. There are currently ten UYCP participants working at various LifeStream locations.

DDS officials received a tour of LifeStream’s Day Habilitation Program at Welby Road, at which several UYCP participants are employed. DDS Commissioner Elin Howe was on hand, along with UYCP Director Gerald Scott and Regional Director Rick O’Meara.

“UYCP is a great opportunity for young adults on several levels,” stated Paul Correia, Senior Vice President, Employment & Training at LifeStream. “It provides them with meaningful summer jobs, which are often difficult to find. In addition to the employment aspect, it gives them an opportunity to work with and learn more about individuals with disabilities. Many who complete this program are able to leverage this experience and make a career in human services.”

More than 2,000 youths have been placed in valuable jobs through Massachusetts since the program’s inception in 1995.

Participants from the New Bedford area include: Paige Correira, Angie De peña, Barbara Figaro, Meghan Suarez, Jazmine Vega, Brina Garcia, Carlissa Santos, and Marissa Pires. Participants from Fall River are John Loughran and Kyle Rodrigues.
