Tune in on 98.5FM
RDU is still up and running so tune in at 98.5FM or online.
Internet allowances and charges
Remember, although you get 2GB of internet usage free per month (4GB for postgrads), any usage over that limit whether by wireless connection or directly via the UC network will incur a charge of $2 per GB. There have been some periods over the past 18 months where charging was suspended, but charges are now back on per ICT policy. Keep an eye on your usage at My IT Account.
Feedback opportunity: proposed University crossings safety improvements
The City Council has revised this proposal due to feedback received from the local community. They are now requesting further feedback with a deadline of 15 October. View the full proposal.
Writing a thesis?
Dont miss GradFest, 29 Oct - 1 Nov, L3, Central Library.
The Learning Skills Centre is running its annual week of free workshops and lectures for postgrads. More information about GradFest on the LSC website.
UC Showcase Conference
The conference, organized by the UCSA, PGSA and the DPGR, will be held on Wednesday 14 November. The conference is open to all postgraduate research students. The focus of the conference is on the promotion of the interesting, innovative and important research being conducted by postgraduate students from across the University. Monitor the Postgraduate website for details.
Democracy in the Pacific Conference
18-19 October. This conference is being hosted by Pacific Studies at UC in honour of Professor John Henderson, acknowledging his significant contributions to Pacific related issues. There is a poster session for any postgraduate students who are working on research that relates to the Pacific. Research can come from any field and it is hoped that the extent of Pacific related research that is being carried out at UC can be highlighted. If you are interested in presenting a poster (there will be prizes awarded for the three best posters) then please contact Russell Taylor (russell.taylor@canterbury.ac.nz).
Be email safe
If you receive an email that seems to be from the University asking you for your username and password, you can be pretty sure it's a scam: the University will never request such information via email. Be careful about opening attachments to any email, too!
Securing your bike
Check out these tips for keeping your bike secure on the Bikewise website.
Tips to beat burglary
Police in the Riccarton West area are warning residents to remain vigilant after some recent burglaries in the area. This increase follows a six-week period where there were no burglaries in Riccarton West.
To reduce the risk of a burglary, make sure you:
- Lock your doors and windows.
- Record the serial numbers of expensive electronic items and photograph these and other valuables. Visit the SNAP website at www.snap.org.nz for advice.
- Keep valuables out of sight.
- Install an alarm system.
- Get security lights fitted.
- Keep your house secure when you are out in the garden or yard.
A good way of combating burglars is to get to know your neighbours by joining a Neighbourhood Support Group. Visit the NSG website.
IceFest celebrations
In addition to film nights, concerts, dinners, fireworks, bands, ice skating, art exhibitions, food and drink, a real Antarctic field camp and many more attractions, there is a stimulating range of discussions and debates. There is something for everyone at this festival so be sure to check out www.nzicefest.co.nz for more details before the festival ends on 14 October.
Check out This Awful Place: Te Radar at 8pm this Saturday 6 October in the UC Geo Dome, Hagley Park. Following his trip to Antarctica with Our Far South, Te Radar presents This Awful Place, an illustrated comedic lecture on all things Antarctic. The rigours of scurvy, scientific madness, odd flora and fauna and the even odder folk who have been there - Te Radar asks questions you never thought of and provides answers you never realised you wanted to know about the land that Scott called "an awful place".
We are giving away a double pass to This Awful Place but these tickets don't come easy. Reply to this email with your favourite, clean, joke (for no other reason than to keep us communications folks amused) and the tickets will go to the submission that makes us laugh the loudest. Submissions must be in by 8am, Friday 5 October and you must be able to collect the tickets from the UC campus by 5pm Friday.
Follow IceFest on Facebook to keep up with all events.
The 3rd New Zealand Chinese Character Calligraphy Competition.
The final day of work submission is 30 October. See the Confucious Insitute website for details.
