Editor's note

During his election campaign, US President Donald Trump threatened to get rid of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, the United States and Mexico, citing his country’s trade deficit with its southern neighbour. But NAFTA has actually been a boon for US farmers because Mexico depends heavily on American agriculture to feed its people.

Facing the threat of American protectionism, Mexico is now opening up its market to other global breadbaskets such as Brazil and Argentina, note Cecilia Tortajada and Asit Biswas, and this may be very bad news for the American Corn Belt.
