Dear Member

Welcome to your South-East Asia newsletter

With the IFoA’s 2016 Council Election opening soon, I would encourage you to take the opportunity to nominate and vote for members from South-East Asia.  Your input is important to form a Council that truly represents our global membership.

This quarter’s newsletter also covers updates on the upcoming IFoA visits, activities and volunteering prospects in the region.  For those up for a challenge in data analytics, here is the chance to showcase your skills.

On behalf of the IFoA, I would like to wish our student members all the best in the April exams.  To members in Cambodia and Thailand, Happy Khmer New Year and Happy Songkran Festival!

Caryn Chua
Actuary Representative of South-East Asia

Council Elections 2016
  • Are you a Fellow or Associate?
  • Have you considered standing for IFoA Council in the 2016 Election?
  • Would you like to nominate or support someone?

If the answer is yes, nominations and voting for our Council Election will be opening soon.  We currently do not have any South-East Asia representatives on Council, and so if you are keen, this is the chance to get our voices heard!

Look out for updates on our website, or email Caryn Chua for more information.

The IFoA Asia Conference

It's a wrap for the IFoA Asia Conference 2016 in Kuala Lumpur! The event which saw over 370 professionals from across 20 countries, and 100 students from local universities in Malaysia, in attendance was a huge success.  This is now our third largest IFoA conference after Life and GIRO.

Planning is already underway for the Asia Conference 2017 and Hong Kong will be our next destination. Dates will be confirmed soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

Should you be interested in volunteering as committee members, please contact Debbie Atkins to register your interest.  Debbie will notify you when the details are on our volunteer vacancies webpage.

Spotlight on student volunteer: Ooi Choong Hern

"I started my journey as a volunteer with the IFoA in 2015 when I was recruited to be the representative of South-East Asia in the inaugural International Student Consultative Forum (ISCF).  The ISCF was set up to discuss opportunities and challenges faced by students outside the UK.

My role in the ISCF has also given me the opportunity to engage with many actuarial students in my region.  By sharing their experience, thoughts and concerns with the IFoA Education team, I hope I can somewhat contribute in shaping the future of aspiring actuaries.

To all students, we can be reached at asia.iscf@actuaries.org.uk.  We welcome your queries, suggestions and comments, and look forward to hearing from you."

Release of pass marks

Our qualifications are highly regarded by our members globally. There are currently over 14,000 individuals studying for these qualifications. One of the regular requests received from those sitting exams is greater clarity on what they need to achieve to pass.

As part of the ongoing efforts to support those studying, we are pleased to announce that for any exam sat after 1 March 2016, for the CAA, Associate or Fellowship qualification, candidates will receive their percentage exam mark. Exam pass marks will also be published on the pass list and in the examiners’ report for each exam.

Further details, including what results documentation a candidate will receive, will be added to our webpages over the months leading up to June when the first results under the new system will be released.
