Greetings from your Community Board
Kia ora koutou,
It's lovely to see our local youth from the Healthy Ōpāwaho project getting together with others to enjoy a well-earned treat after all the great work they've done this year.
I'm pleased work is already underway on the Dyers Pass upgrade and the new Nor'West Arc Cycleway, as both are important for the safety of our community. Staff are developing an activities guide for older adults in our area, and we'd love to hear your suggestions.
We've held our last Board meeting of the year and will be reconvening in the New Year to continue the positive momentum in our community. Although this year has brought some challenges, it's also brought opportunities, and I've shared my thoughts on this below. On behalf of the Board, we wish you all happy and safe holidays with your friends and loved ones.
Stay together, look after one another.
Board Chair, Karolin Potter
Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Tuesday 15 December. Highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents and groups as part of our Public Forum and Deputations by Appointment.
We heard from Jill Kearns, Centre Manager and Katie Nash, Centre Administrator of Barrington Mall, about ongoing concerns with begging at Barrington Mall and received an update on the Age-Friendly Public Transport Project from Dr Angela Curl from Otago University. It was great to have data back up what we've heard from our communities about areas where it's hard to access public transport.
Ruth Sarson from Environment Canterbury presented findings from a pilot study that assessed odours near Bupa Care Services Limited in Cashmere. We were very impressed with how ECan is working collaboratively with Bupa to mitigate any odours.
Our Board approved a grant of $1,050 from its 2020/21 Discretionary Response Fund to Landsdowne Terrace Playcentre towards the Landsdowne Community Centre Mural. Council's Graffiti Team will supply paint and brushes to paint the mural.
We received the Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board Area Report for December 2020, which gives us an overview of all the great things going on in our community. You can read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.
Looking back at 2020 and forward to 2021*Written by Karolin Potter, Chair of the Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board One of the things I thought about this year is how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our Christchurch City Council staff at the Beckenham Service centre, along with council staff from throughout the city, worked shifts with Civil Defence and other agencies supporting older people and the most vulnerable in our communities. It was fantastic to hear of the amazing work happening to support those in need.
At this time of the year I’d like to thank local council staff and those in Hereford street for all their hard work throughout the year, not the least of which was introducing us all to Zoom, so we could all stay connected during the lockdown.
During our Board meetings, we have discussed a huge range of issues including flooding, drought so severe it killed swathes of native plantings, and the successful planting of new trees and natives including behind the shops on Centaurus Road and within the new developments in Cracroft. We looked at road safety in many communities, including Addington School children crossing Brougham Street, Hoon Hay Road and the three schools in that area, not to mention the increased traffic flow on Cashmere Road from housing developments in the southwest. The number of cyclists is surpassing all predictions and we look forward to the Norwest Arc’s completion in February 2021.
It was great to have Manuka Cottage up and running in Addington and a new committee for the old Children’s Library building on Hoon Hay Road. The Ōpāwaho River Network continues its amazing work with schools on and near the river such as Beckenham and Cashmere High, supporting terrific environmental work. Our residents associations continue to campaign on issues important in their areas and we look forward to work being at long last completed on the exit from Barrington Mall that the Spreydon Neighbourhood Network worked so hard for. They and their near neighbours, the Somerfield Residents Association and the Lower Cashmere Residents Assdociation, continue to work for safer roads and the parks that serve their communities. Huntsbury turned one hundred, Addington had its usual rock and roll fair and the Pacific
series saw hundreds and hundreds of people playing and supporting rugby league and the Hoon Hay Fiesta over a weekend. It has been a year of great change but we are lucky to live in Aotearoa and we look forward in the Waihoro/Spreydon-Cashmere Wards of Ōtautahi to a New Year that brings peace, good cheer and kindness to all.
The start of 2021 will see us focusing our attention on Council’s Long Term Plan 2021-2031, which will go out for consultation in February. Please do try and get involved in this engagement, as this document sets out the Council’s budget for the next 10 years and will play a big part in shaping the future of our city.
Until then, have a safe and relaxing holidays, and we look forward to being in touch again early next year!
Ngā mihi o te Kirihimete me te Tau Hou.

Healthy Ōpāwaho programme celebrates first yearOn Friday 4 December, 15 student leaders from 5 participating schools (Hillmorton and Cashmere High Schools, Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto, Our Lady of Assumption and West Spreydon School) celebrated being the first year of the Healthy Ōpāwaho programme by canoeing on the Ōtakaro Avon River and enjoying ice creams from the Riverside Market.
They were joined by representatives from Junior Neighbourhood Support, Kids Greening Tāupo, Christchurch City Council and our link teachers from Hillmorton High School and Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. The students enjoyed catching up with one another and spending time on the awa identifying insects, fish, ducks and rubbish. This year student leaders have led riparian restoration projects, and a storm water drain monitoring project (identifying and removing litter in storm water drains that would otherwise have ended up in the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River). Students have also been involved in eel and habitat surveys and have been actively encouraging their communities to engage with their awa. Thanks to the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board for the Off
the Ground Funding which enabled us to run this event. The Ōpāwaho Heathcote River network also provided vouchers for Riverside Market (a prize won by students for their photo essay for the World Rivers Day Photographic competition).

What can you recycle at Christmas?Don’t let the growing mound of packaging, wrapping paper, broken decorations and empty bottles get on top of you this Christmas. Use these helpful tips to make the right decisions about what to do with your festive waste. Disposing of Christmas gift unwrapping- You can put cardboard or paper left behind after Christmas presents have been
unwrapped into the yellow wheelie bin as long as it is bigger in size than an envelope and doesn’t have a plastic coating.
- If you’re uncertain try the tear test. If your Christmas wrapping paper tears it is paper and can be recycled. If it doesn't tear, put it in the red bin.
Excess food- Food scraps (including chicken and turkey bones) and any left-overs you no longer can use can be disposed of in the green organics wheelie bin.
Getting rid of unwanted Christmas gifts- If you have unwanted Christmas gifts, think about taking them to a charity shop or one of the EcoDrop recycling centres. You can find out more about what items are accepted at EcoDrop centres here.
