Day 6 - Sunday March 22

Chenoweth Claims Junior Jumper Honors

Maddie Chenoweth dominated the Junior Jumper sections at the 70th Annual Pin Oak Charity Horse Show I, winning the Medium/High and Low championships aboard Caplander (pictured) and La Tonia, respectively.

Both horses earned the exact same ribbons this week: two blues and a second in the Classic for their titles.

Chenoweth, 17, of Houston, Texas, rides with Berry Porter of Brookside Pine Farms. Her journey with Porter began in the 2'6" hunters five years ago and has taken her to a grand prix debut this winter.

Caplander, a 14-year-old Holsteiner, carried Chenoweth to the Medium/High championship at Pin Oak as well as second place in the $25,000 Great Southwest Grand Prix in February.

"We imported him a year ago in April. He's done 1.60m in Europe, and he’s the best horse I could have asked for. He’s amazing, and I love him," she said.

Chenoweth described "Capi" as like a puppy dog. "He follows me around and always checks me for treats," she said laughing. "If something is scary, he wants to sit in my lap!"

It would be hard to mistake Capi for a lapdog, however, as the 17.2-hand warmblood presents an impressive presence in the show ring.

"He has saved my butt so many times I can’t even count," she said. "I thank every day that I have him as my horse. He jumps me out of the tack most of the time. I just have to hold on to his braids and hope that I don’t fall off, but every time we go in the ring he jumps his best."

Chenoweth's goal this year is to continue on in the grand prix classes and qualify for the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships this summer.

"I want to travel all over and do the big prixs," she said. "I’ve only done the grand prix classes in Katy. We’re going for Young Riders this year, and we’re currently leading the Young Rider B-team standings. We’re going for it, and we’ll see where it goes from here."

Chenoweth already has next fall mapped out, though. She's been accepted to Baylor University (Texas) and will be riding on the Varsity Equestrian Team.

In addition to acknowledging her horses for their winning efforts, Chenoweth also thanked her parents, Scott and Cindy Chenoweth.  "They are amazing. They follow me around and video me, and I'm just so thankful for everything they do for me."

Four Fillies LLC's Con Chino Z and Elizabeth Adelson (pictured below) jumped to victory in the Medium/High Junior Jumper Classic.

Step Aside Farm Riders Step Up For Victories

Hallie Fei Smith and Jordan Cobb kept the Step Aside Farm trainers Donna Cheney and Domonie Schiff busy this morning with multiple wins in the Valobra Jewelry and Otto Hunter rings.

Smith (pictured above) captured the Junior Hunter 3’3” Classic blue ribbon and earned the reserve championship in a section of the 3’3” Junior Hunters aboard Mouse.

"We’re still learning, but he’s been able to teach me a lot about patience, and so now we ended up with these [awards]," said Smith. "I really couldn’t ask for a better horse."

Smith, 17, of Austin, Texas, is leasing Mouse for this, her final junior year, and she was thrilled to have started out so strongly this spring.

"This is the first time I’ve won a classic at Pin Oak, and it’s wonderful," she said. "I recently stepped up to the 3’3” Juniors with him, so to have gotten this far was the best thing. We’re really in sync together."

Smith is a senior at St. Stephen's Episcopal School and plans to attend NewSchool of Architecture & Design in San Diego in the fall. This week's win was particularly meaningful because Smith won't be able to attend Pin Oak II.

"I'll be doing a Fine Arts Festival next week," she said. "It's tough balancing time, but, again if you’re able to dedicate your time you’re able to do it, I believe. I keep school first, but horses are always close to my heart."

Cobb, of Austin, Texas, earned the Large Green Pony Hunter Championship with Park Avenue (pictured) and won the Pony Hunter Classic with Casanova.

She was proud of both ponies for their performances today. She purchased Park Avenue, a 7-year-old German Riding Pony, in the fall of 2013 and did a year of the Children's Hunter Pony section before they moved into the Greens this year.

'He’s awesome, and he’s super smart," she said. "When I got him, he’d just come over from Germany, and he was really green. But he’s a super good pony, and he’s come a long way."

Park Avenue currently stands third in the USEF Large Green Pony National Horse of the Year standings. Their score of 86 in the Classic was one of their best rounds to date.

"That felt good since he’s still green, and I haven’t received that many scored rounds on him," she said. "He was super good, especially marching in without a warm up; I was really proud of him."

Casanova captured the competitive Pony Hunter Classic. "He was awesome, too," she said. "He was a little nervous with the wind, but we pulled it together. My first show on him was this show last year. We had a lot of trouble in the beginning, but we’ve come a long way."

In between her riding duties, Cobb is working as an intern for The Plaid Horse. "I'm taking photos, posting on Instagram and maybe writing an article or two and handing out magazines," she said. "I really like it, and it’s been a really good experience."

In today's featured 70th Anniversary Pin Oak Equitation Championship, Sloan Hopson (pictured below) topped the class aboard Patricia Roberts' Ventura.

Raposa Wins Pin Oak Collegiate Invitational

Schaefer Raposa's consistent rides resulted in championship honors for Southern Methodist University in the hotly contested Pin Oak Collegiate Invitational, held March 22.

Raposa, 21, of Clinton, New York, arrived in Katy on Saturday night, just in time for the draw and to watch the $30,000 Hildebrand Fund Grand Prix.

"This is my first time being to a Texas horse show, and it was so fun last night seeing the Catalena Cowgirls," said Raposa of the Precision Rodeo Drill Team that performed prior to the grand prix. "It means a lot being chosen to come and represent the SMU team. It was a great win."

Raposa enjoyed the horses she competed, including Upcountry Betty, Converse and Texas Checkmate. "The last horse was super fun. He was like hot wheels going around. He was great," she said.

Raposa, a top pony and junior rider who won the 2011 Pessoa/USEF Medal Finals, has also enjoyed ample success on the SMU team. She was Second Team All-American as a freshman and received Honorable Mention as a sophomore.

"This year I hope to get to Nationals and collectively as a team to bring it home," said Raposa. "For me, personally, I want to be competive and earn my points for the team and keep going forward."

Hunt Seat Coach Natalie Burton accompanied Raposa to Pin Oak and was thrilled with her performance.

"Schaefer’s one of the most dependable kids on our team," said Burton. "She never makes me nervous, and she always goes in and gets the most out of the horse that anyone possibly could. There’s never any worry with her. The horses today were amazing, and we were so lucky to get some great horses."

Coronet's Finale, owned by Havilande Hendrix and trained by Berry Porter of Brookside Pine Farms, received the Best Horse Award (pictured below).

Competing schools included:

  • Delaware State University
  • Fresno State
  • New Mexico State University
  • Texas A&M University
  • Southern Methodist University
  • Texas Christian University
  • Louisiana State University
  • Rice University
