CPC's Six Early Childhood Centers Reopen for
In-Person ServicesCPC's six early childhood centers reopened on September 21st for in-person services for families. Council Member Peter Koo joined our Lois C. Lee Childhood Center staff in Flushing to welcome families back. On September 23rd, NYS Senator Brian Kavanagh came to visit Chung Pak Early Childhood Center and NYS Assembly Member Ron Kim visited Lois C. Lee Early Childhood Center. On September 25th, NYS Senator Brad Hoylman visited the CPC Early Childhood Center at Tribeca.

CPC Quoted in Chalkbeat ArticleMary Cheng, CPC's Childhood Development Services Director, was quoted in a Chalkbeat New York article on September 3rd. The article focuses on Learning Bridges, which aims to support low-income and working families while students are not in schools. Few details about how Learning Bridges will operate are available to potential providers or parents.

CPC Community Health Services Keeps 600 Youth Engaged Online This summer, our Community Health Services PREP team has adapted in-person workshops to reach youth by providing services via Zoom and other platforms.
Essential Worker Highlight: Suzan Lam, Director of CPC Project GatewaySuzan Lam, Director of CPC Project Gateway, was recently featured in our essential workers campaign. Suzan helps youth and their families navigate the college experience. Throughout the pandemic, she has also worked as a Resource Navigator offering guidance and support for those in need of resources as they battle COVID-19.
FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
Essential Worker Highlight: Susan Zheng, Manager of CPC Individual Residential Alternative Susan Zheng, Manager of the Individual Residential Alternative at the Josephine M. Ho Community Residence for Special Needs, was recently featured in our essential workers campaign. Susan oversees the program that provides 24-hour care and activities for the six residents with developmental disabilities in a group home. Susan was recognized by City and State as a "Local Queens Hero".
Find High-Quality Child Care Through CPC's Family Child Care Providers Network CPC Family Child Care Networks assist families applying for subsidized child care and help parents find high-quality, in-network family child care. Anyone in need of these services with children aged 6 weeks to 3 years should call 929-538-9407 (Ms. Chen), or 929-538-9883 (Ms. Wu) for assistance.
Essential Worker Highlight: Amy Chen, Supervisor of CPC Asian Family Services Amy Chen, Supervisor of CPC Asian Family Services, was recently featured in our essential workers campaign. Asian Family Services is a child abuse/neglect prevention program that offers a variety of services to help caretakers understand acceptable child rearing practices and to keep children out of the foster care system. Over 400 families, 800 children, and 900 caretakers have benefitted from the program.
Steve Mei, CPC's Brooklyn Community Services Director, was quoted in a Gothamist article published on September 30th. CPC Brooklyn Community Center in Sunset Park was one of the distribution sites for free, culturally-appropriate meals prepared by members of the Street Vendor Project.

Essential Worker Highlight: Joanna Chan, Director, Brooklyn Enrichment Services Joanna Chan, Director, Brooklyn Enrichment Services, was recently featured in our essential worker campaign. Joanna oversees five of our school-based afterschool programs in Brooklyn but moved into an emergency responder role at our Regional Enrichment Center in the wake of COVID-19. She is also a supervisor of CPC's Resource Navigators Program, which supports those affected by COVID-19.
CPC Summer Alternative Program Prepares Young People for Careers CPC launched and operated a successful CPC Summer Alternative Program (SAP), a virtual career readiness initiative for NYC high school and college participants, in July and August. A total of 155 students, including many low-income, immigrant, and first-in-family youth, participated.
CPC Quoted in Politico Article on NYC's Budget Crisis CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho was quoted in an article from Politico (paywall) about the city's struggle to address a significant budget shortfall.
CPC and NYC Commission on Human Rights Host Know Your Rights Amid COVID-19 Webinar On September 17th, CPC and the NYC Commission on Human Rights hosted a Know Your Rights Amid COVID-19 workshop. NYS Senator Andrew Gounardes and Council Members Carlos Menchaca and Justin Brannan stopped by to provide support.
Flushing Mobility Collaborative Launches Community Survey to Solve Economic Challenges in FlushingThe Flushing Mobility Collaborative released its community survey after months of planning and preparation with community members and stakeholders. The community survey was announced on September 14th during a virtual press conference with Collaborative partners.
CPC Rallies with Nonprofits to Save the Indirect Cost Rate On September 15th, CPC joined the Human Services Council, Council Member Ben Kallos, and dozens of human services providers to call for the Mayor to reinstate funding for indirect costs and to stop retroactive budget cuts to the Indirect Cost Rate Funding Initiative. More than 140 people participated in the rally, including Wayne Ho, CPC's President and CEO, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Council Member Brad Lander, and Council Member Helen Rosenthal.
CPC Distributes More Than $1.25 Million in Cash Assistance From March to August, CPC has provided $1,250,900 in direct cash assistance to 1,543 families in dire need. Assistance resources provided by funders including Gerstner Family Foundation (via United Neighborhood Houses), the Mayor's Fund, the New York Immigration Coalition, Robin Hood, and the Zegar Family Foundation.
CPC Joins Caravans and Cyclists for the Census Throughout September, CPC staff have participated in community outreach to ensure our neighbors know the importance of filling out the Census as well as the deadline -- now set to Monday October 5th, 2020.
