On October 25th, United Neighborhood Houses (UNH) held their virtual benefit and recognized all settlement house staff who worked for at least 25 years at their organization. CPC had an amazing showing, as over 35 staff were acknowledged for their dedication to the community! EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. Halloween Brings Treats to CPC Early Childhood and After School Programs CPC's early childhood centers and school-age after school programs celebrated Halloween in scary creative ways. Some picked mini pumpkins from a mini pumpkin patch, created their own jack-o-lanterns with paint and glitter, and dressed as their favorite storybook characters. CPC Quoted in The City Article on Early Childhood Centers in NYCHA Facilities CPC's Director of Jacob Riis Early Childhood Education Center Yvette Ho was quoted in a recent article in The City about the conditions of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) facilities. CPC Jacob Riis Early Childhood Education Center is located in a NYCHA facility and has faced floods among other difficulties in the building. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. Nan Shan Senior Center Hosts COVID-19 Booster Information Session On October 7th, our seniors at Nan Shan Senior Center in Flushing, Queens, had their questions and concerns regarding the booster shot answered by a doctor. Thank you Rendr Care for facilitating the workshop! Residents of Hong Ning Housing for the Elderly Pick Apples for Double Ninth FestivalOn October 15th, the Wellness Program at Hong Ning Housing for the Elderly took 20 residents and home care attendants apple picking. It was also a special autumn day known as the Double Ninth Festival. CPC and Partners Provide Free Vaccinations and Booster ShotsOn October 23rd, CPC and Charles B Wang Community Health Center partnered with NYC Health + Hospitals to provide free COVID-19 vaccination and booster shots to nearly 30 community members in Brooklyn. CPC Hurricane Ida Relief Covered by News 12As one of several partner organizations, CPC will provide assistance and accept applications for community members to access the relief funds. The application period closes on Friday, November 26th. In order to qualify, the applicants must a) themselves not be eligible for FEMA assistance and b) not have an individual in their household who is eligible for assistance. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Calls on Gov. Hochul to Sign Asian American Data Disaggregation Bill CPC as well as other Asian American organizations, allies, and advocates have called on the Governor to sign legislation that will help the state distribute resources to Asian Americans more effectively. The bill passed both the NY State Assembly and Senate in June 2021. EmblemHealth Names New Facility After CPC Executive Director EmblemHealth named its new Flushing facility the "Charles P. Wang Center for Wellness." The Center, named after CPC's former Executive Director Charles P. Wang, opened on October 6th, and was attended by EmblemHealth CEO Karen Ignagni, Charles P. Wang, Congresswoman Grace Meng, and other elected officials and community leaders. CPC Career Center Hosts Virtual Event with DCAS On October 14th, CPC Career Center hosted a virtual information session in partnership with the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Representatives from DCAS gave community members a close look at the job application process for positions in New York City government. CPC Testifies at the NYS Assembly Hearing on Medicaid Program Efficacy and Sustainability CPC Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer Carlyn Cowen testified at the State Legislature's Medicaid hearing on November 1st. Their testimony provided a summary of recommendations that would address the short-term as well as long-term health care needs of all New Yorkers. CPC Mobility LABs Team Hosts Community Listening Session On September 30th, the Mobility LABs team had 39 community participants join the "Concerning Flushing: Community Listening Session" remotely on Zoom. Not only did the team share findings from our community survey, but we also had great conversations regarding our favorite place in Flushing, housing access, and our pilot program starting soon. CPC Participates in Election Day of Service CPC staff and community members participated in get out the vote and election day activities as part of CPC's Day of Service. In the weeks before Tuesday, November 2nd, CPC joined APA VOICE as partners for Get Out the Vote activities, including tabling events at Essex Market. On Election Day, Bo Lo, Gissel Mejia, and Jason Liu of the CPC Family Child Care Network and other staff volunteered as poll workers.
