Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the June 2017 State-by-State Shipments to Wholesalers Report. Please note changes to historical volumes as some state totals may have changed with newly released state-level data.

Below are some key points from the report:

  • Beer shipments to wholesalers grew in June, marking the second month in a row of growth.
  • June’s shipment volume increased by 1.3% compared to June 2016 with the same number of selling days.
  • Shipments are now down 0.6% year-to-date through June and 0.7% over the last 12 months.
  • Beer volumes had been down 2.2% during the first quarter of 2017, but they improved to up 0.6% during the second quarter--a swing of nearly 3 percentage points.
  • First quarter performance had been severely hampered by high distributor inventories and relatively soft economic growth.
  • The second quarter showed accelerated economic growth, which was driven partly by strong performance in overall consumer spending. This growth is reflected in beer’s improved performance in the second quarter.
