The German government has been thrust into a constitutional crisis after potential coalition partners pulled out of talks at the weekend. Dan Hough considers how the country might find a route through – and if Chancellor Angela Merkel will be able to navigate it.
In the heart of Wiltshire, a team of archaeologists has unearthed an extraordinary glimpse of the way we lived almost 6,000 years ago. We’re used to the idea of neolithic burial sites, but Jim Leary writes that the structure in the Vale of Pewsey is something different altogether – and hints at an ancient idea of collective identity to rival the warring families of Game of Thrones.
Pharmaceutical firm Allergan has struck a sale-and-leaseback deal with a Native American tribe on the patent for one of its blockbuster drugs. The deal keeps the patent out of the reach of rivals wishing to challenge it in US courts, as tribal reservations have “sovereign immunity” over certain federal laws. Luke McDonagh explains why this deal isn’t as sweet as it seems.
And the death of Charles Manson has reminded the world of the savage murders that brought a chilling and brutal close to the “swinging sixties”. Counterculture expert James Riley examines how Manson achieved his dark celebrity, while Linda and Rod Dubrow-Marshall take a look at how he was able to manipulate others to commit murder.
