Wellbeing: feel good, work well

We all work under varying amounts of pressure and if this is not excessive, this pressure can stimulate and motivate us and keep us engaged.

Work related stress may be defined as being 'the adverse reaction people have to excessive work pressures or other types of demand placed on them' (UoE Policy). A number of actions are already being taken to create a positive work culture to improve both the wellbeing and engagement in the workplace these include:

  • A new Wellbeing Policy – to be launched shortly
  • Wellness Week - starting on the 7 November it includes workshops, activities and classes
  • Health and Safety Legal Briefing for Senior Managers
  • Improved Performance and Development Review (PDR) processes
  • The introduction of Academic Leads in Colleges
  • The expansion of Investors in People (IiP) to include professional services staff in Colleges

In addition we will also have a major training programme starting in January 2012.  ‘Resilience for Managers’ aims to help managers understand the key factors of stress for individuals in the work place, and learn about behaviours and thinking styles which can help them become more resilient.

New for 2011 - ASPIRE Fellowship Scheme
Are you a member of staff at the University who teaches or supports students’ learning? Are you looking to gain a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, to accredit your professional practice? From September 2011, you can do this at the University of Exeter through the ASPIRE Fellowship scheme.

What is ASPIRE?
It’s a framework for developing and accrediting staff who teach and support students’ learning that is accredited by the Higher Education Academy. It offers you the opportunity to gain both a University of Exeter ASPIRE Fellowship and the correlating HEA Fellowship at one of four levels.  Not only does it stimulate individual and group development through peer dialogue and the sharing of good practice; it also promotes critical engagement with higher education-related literature.
