Editor's note

Australians have come to expect humility from CEOs. We’d like to think of them as being willing to sacrifice their own interests for the good of shareholders and even the general public. To step down when the company they lead has failed.

But research shows CEOs are products of the competitive world they inhabit. They are more likely to be overconfident and ambitious and are rewarded for it.
