Firstwell Corporation and the Production Mandate Question

Two facilities owned by large U.S.-based multinational enterprise (one in Canada, one in the United States) are competing for a regional manufacturing and distribution mandate. The head of Firstwell's global operating committee must decide whether the proposal from Firstwell Canada is best not only for the Kingston, Ontario plant but also for Firstwell Corporation worldwide. This case is intended for use in an international strategy course. It can be used in sections which deal with organization issues, entrepreneurial behavior within a large organization, and the pressures for global integration and coordination. The case also examines the strengths and weaknesses of the process subsidiaries can use to move a mandate proposal forward within a large organization.

The case describes an innovative business model offering wine and a French cultural experience to North American markets. Students are given an opportunity to learn about the challenges of reviving a 1,000 year old chateau, farmhouse and vineyard while building a viable wine export and travel experience business. The case refers to an online, 15-minute video that includes an interview with the entrepreneur, pictures of the Montlaur estate and excerpts about Guédelon Castle, a medieval construction project. This case is primarily written to be used in a course on innovation management; however it is also appropriate for courses on strategy, international management behavior and entrepreneurship. Sher-Wood Hockey Sticks: Global Sourcing

In early 2011, the senior executives of the venerable Canadian hockey stick manufacturer, Sher-Wood Hockey (Sher-Wood), were pondering whether to move the remainder of the company’s high-end composite hockey and goalie stick production to its suppliers in China. Sher-Wood had been losing market share as retail prices continued to fall. Would outsourcing the production of the iconic, Canadian-made hockey sticks to China help Sher-Wood to boost demand significantly? Was there any other choice? The case can be used in advanced undergraduate or MBA courses in international business or strategic management. It presents opportunities to review the key drivers, decision process, and potential impact of global sourcing. The case considers the motivations to outsource manufacturing both within and outside national borders. Various alternatives are considered, as is the possibility of eventual reshoring of production back from emerging markets.
