Storing Insulated Lunchboxes and Lunch Bags
Element 2.1.2 - Health Practices and Procedures
Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented Assessors may sight: Evidence that families are provided with information and support that helps them to follow the service's hygiene procedures
Storing a lunchbox or lunch bag safely is important to keep the food inside safe to eat. Insulated lunchboxes and lunch bags are very popular as they keep food cool whilst being transported. However, it is very important that these insulated lunchboxes/bags are left UNZIPPED when put into the fridge to ensure that cool air can still enter the lunchbox/bag. If left zipped/closed, it can not be guaranteed that the temperature inside the lunchbox/bag will be under 5°C and safe to eat. Click on the link to download a poster to
put on your fridges or around your service to remind families and staff to unzip lunchboxes/bags if children are putting them into a fridge. You can also remind families to unzip lunch bags if they are in their fridge at home (for example, if they make their child's lunch the night before).
Element 2.1.2 - Health Practices and Procedures
Effective illness and injury management and hygiene practices are promoted and implemented Assessors may discuss: How cleanliness of the service is consistently maintained
Legislation requires food businesses to have clean premises including fixtures, fittings and equipment. In addition, anything that comes into contact with food such as utensils, equipment and surfaces must also be sanitised. Although some OSHC facilities are not required to be a licensed food business, it is still best practice to clean and sanitise. Click on the links below to find out more about what should be cleaned vs. sanitised in your setting and also advice for food businesses from FSANZ.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (Children’s Day) is celebrated across the country each year on 4th August. Children’s Day is a time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities and all Australians celebrate the strengths and culture of our children. It is an opportunity for us to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child. Children’s Day has been run annually since 1988 and is the initiative of SNAICC – National Voice for our Children. Click on the link below to find out more.
