Recyclables being emptied into yellow lidded bin

Recycle Right In Ryde

Do the right thing when you put it in the bin!

“Every City of Ryde resident can play a part in diverting waste from landfill. We encourage you to separate recyclables from your general waste. It’s important that you and your household know what can go in your recycling bin.” City of Ryde Mayor Clr Jerome Laxale said.

The following recyclable items are permitted in recycling bins:

  • Plastic bottles and rigid plastic containers (recycling numbers 1 – 7)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Aluminium cans, steel cans and empty aerosol cans
  • Foil scrunched into a ball no smaller than a fist
  • Paper and cardboard.

Remember: No soft plastics, plastic bags, foam or polystyrene. Visit our website for a detailed list of accepted and prohibited items for your recycling bin and other practical recycling tips.

Street scape with new trees planted

Street Tree Planting Program

Council is continuing to roll out its Street Tree Planting Program. The focus is on planting entire streets, avenues or roads that have been identified as being high priority due to interest from residents and/or significant habitat corridors. For 2018 and 2019, we will be focusing on the entire length of Morrison Road in Putney/Gladesville. When selecting the tree species to be planted on the nature strip, Council has highly qualified staff that have studied and worked in the horticultural industry for many years. Careful planning and consideration is given to each individual location and the tree species that is best suited to that location.

In addition to the street tree planting program, residents can also request a new tree for their street.

Tips For Kerbside Bin Collection

The City of Ryde provides waste services to over 45,000 properties each week. Here are some reminders to make sure your bins are emptied:

  • Wheel your bin to the kerb so they face the street and stand a minimum of 30cm apart.
  • Place your bins free of any obstructions (eg. parked cars, trees, power poles or lines).
  • Do not overload or overfill your bins. The lids must fully close.
  • Do not line your recycle bin or garden organic bin with plastic liners or use plastic bags.
  • Check what you can put in your bins to avoid bins not being emptied due to contamination.

Soft plastics

Facts And Tips

  1. Absolutely no plastic bags, bin liners or soft plastics (eg. bubble wrap or plastic wrappers) should be placed in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or garden organic bin (green lid). These items contaminate the recycling and composting processes, can damage the mechanical processing equipment and result in recoverable resources being unnecessarily sent to landfill.
  2. Collect your soft plastic items at home such as plastic bags, bread bags, rice/pasta bags, cereal box liners, biscuit wrappers, bubble wrap and old green polypropylene shopping bags. Drop them into your nearest REDcycle collection bin, which are located at most major supermarkets. These items are then converted in a range of recycled-plastic products (eg. outdoor furniture, fitness equipment and traffic bollards). [Learn More]
