Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, Board Chair, Alexandra Davids Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Wednesday 14 April. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local resident Karen Christensen, who spoke to the Board about the Bays Area Skate Park and Sumner Village Green Landscape Plan Approval, as part of our Public Forum. Sara Templeton (third from left) judging a delicious selection of jams and pickles at the Avebury Gala A word from Councilor Sara TempletonOne of the things I love most about my job is seeing the wide range of community groups doing amazing mahi in our city. In the last couple of months I’ve been to a range of great local events, including the Redcliffs Residents Association and Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre AGMs, helping judge the jams at the Avebury Gala and the opening of the Single Fin Mingle. The launch of the Community Waterways Partnership and the Garden Pride Awards were amazing and I went to a range of community events around the 10th anniversary of the earthquakes. It’s also been busy at the Council end of things, with consultation on the draft Long Term Plan and Climate Change Strategy happening. These are important documents that will guide investment across the city and programmes of work. We also have the Representation Review out for consultation. It asks how you would like to elect your Council and Community Board members and proposes some ward boundaries and a change to our community board. It is your city and your voice does make a difference. As always – feel free to contact me about any issues. Ngā mihi, Sara. FRESH events a successUptown Boogie Down was held at the Christchurch Art Gallery, and was the second event run by YCD for youth in Christchurch, after their very well attended Pop Up Youth Party in December 2020. The event was free, with live music from Scribe, basketball hoops and food. They also held the FRESH Pool Party at Waltham pool on Sunday 28 March with music and free entry to the pools. The Waikura/Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board granted funding to YCD for a series of youth events through their Discretionary Response Fund. Come along to FRESH HoopsJoin us for FRESH Central Hoops on Wednesday 21 April at the Youth Space, 122 Lichfield Street. The event runs from 1-5pm. We hope to see you there! Move to grow "greenspace" in inner eastOur Community Board recently approved a development plan to ‘green the east’ and enhance and increase outdoor space in our community. These green projects will help boost our natural habitat to support ecological health and community well-being in the city’s inner east. The plan includes green corridors, trees and walkways and spaces that encourage biodiversity, nature play areas, pocket parks, and interweaving cultural history. Chairperson of the Working Group, Board member Michelle Lomax, says that the “importance of the natural environment to our health and well-being can never be underestimated”. “While we live in the city, it’s vital that we improve our ‘breathing space’ and everyday living by enhancing and expanding our green space,” she says. Woolston streetscape upgrade to finish in AprilWork on the multimillion-dollar upgrade of Woolston Village has been extended for one month, with contractors now expected to finish at the end of April. Christchurch City Council Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Lynette Ellis says the streetscape project, which includes installing new pedestrian crossings, mini plazas, wider footpaths, cycle lanes, and landscaping has experienced delays due to the complex nature of the work. Sumner skate park on track for summer startOur Community Board has signed off on the Sumner Village Green landscape plan and the site name, with work on the skate area set to start this summer. Board Chairperson Alexandra Davids says that the Sumner Village Green is really at the heart of the local community, and the decision to approve the overall landscape plan means that “work can move forward on the development of the skate park”.
