Click here May 2022 Impact Newsletter CPC Calls on City Hall to Support Human Services Workers Through #JustPayOn May 25th, CPC joined other human service workers, elected officials, and supporters at City Hall to fight for a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for the human services sector. CPC co-sponsored the rally to call for the City to invest funding for a 5.4% COLA to end poverty wages that are set by government contracts and uplift the workforce that is so essential to our communities. Thanks to our co-sponsors including the Human Services Council, LiveOn NY, Supportive Housing Network of NY, and United Neighborhood Houses.EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Joins CACF and AAPI Organizations to Launch Healing-Centered Youth Workshop SeriesCPC is proud to join the Coalition for Asian Children and Families (CACF) and seven other AAPI organizations in the launch of a co-created healing-centered youth workshop series, the Healing Hub. The goal of the first-of-its-kind initiative is to support youth in the development of racial literacy skills, understanding complex layers and intersections of the AAPI identity, the development of a strong voice that can support the health and safety of our communities at large. CPC's High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies Students Create Art in Response to Gun Violence CPC's High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies students worked with NY Enrichment group's art instructor to process their feelings revolving around gun violence. They are working on this project where each student will design their own design on t-shirt. Students were able to enjoy the workshop by using different media such as paint, markers, yarn, and more to express their feelings in a creative way. CPC PS 20 Attends AAPI Heritage Month Celebration Hosted by Madison Square GardenCPC PS 20 afterschool program participants, Services for Families with Special Needs community members, and Queens Community Services staff attended the AAPI Heritage Month Celebration hosted by Madison Square Garden! NY Knicks Legend John Starks and six-time NHL Stanley Cup winner & Hall of Famer Glenn Anderson participated in the youth clinic at MS 158 in Queens.SAFE (Self-defense. Awareness. Focus. Empowerment) Workshop Series for Staff Kicks Off CPC launched our self-defense and empowerment workshop series, SAFE (Self-defense. Awareness. Focus. Empowerment), as part of our organizational wellness programming on May 26th. Twenty staff participated in our virtual kickoff session led by Chungsanim Master Betty Sze from the World Martial Arts Center. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. CPC Brooklyn Senior Services Celebrated Older Americans Month CPC Brooklyn Senior Services celebrated Older Americans Month with a special event filled with arts, crafts, food, and resources! A special exhibit of art from senior members was also on display at our Brooklyn Community Center. Over 300 older adults come to Brooklyn Senior Services each day. Thank you to Comptroller Brad Lander and Council Member Alexa Aviles for joining us! Nan Shan Senior Center Starts Music Ensemble Members of CPC's Nan Shan Senior Center have started a weekly music group. The older adults have started making beautiful music together playing their instruments, including erhu (Chinese violin), violin, flute, and percussion instruments. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Staff and Community Members Meet with Nearly 40 Elected Officials at 5th Annual City Advocacy Day On April 26th and April 27th, CPC held its 5th Annual City Advocacy Day, meeting with city elected officials and their staff, and rallying at City Hall with over 400 staff and community members in attendance. CPC staff and community members discussed how CPC has been supporting our communities during COVID-19, why it is critical that we fund our programs and human services staff, the increase in anti-AAPI hate, and how we need to invest in AAPI's long-term healing and recovery. CPC Joined the NYC Employment & Training Coalition Rally at City Hall On May 19th, CPC joined the NYC Employment & Training Coalition (NYCETC) and member agencies for the #RecoveryForAllNYC rally at City Hall! We have a critical need to fund more training programs and connect New Yorkers of all backgrounds to quality careers and access to growing sectors of the recovery economy. We urge the Mayor's Office and City Council to fund workforce development programs for an equitable recovery. Amy Latorres, Director of Education and Career Services, Recognized Among Community Moms by DYCDThe Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) celebrated Mother's Day this May by recognizing a "community mom" for their annual award. Amy's commitment to youth development, family strengthening, and community building has touched the lives of thousands of youth and families in Sunset Park over the course of more than 25 years. Congratulations Amy! CPC Participates in New York City's First Ever Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Parade On May 15th, New York City held its first Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Cultural and Heritage Parade. Several CPC staff attended the inaugural parade that took place on 6th Avenue. CPC Hosts the Release of Robin Hood's Annual Poverty Tracker Report On May 5th, CPC hosted the release of Robin Hood's annual Poverty Tracker Report, spotlighting the experience of Asian American New Yorkers living in poverty. Although Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial group the United States, the community is often underrepresented in research. This report also examines the role that government policy played in preventing a sudden increase in poverty driven by the pandemic, while also showing that economic disadvantages remain widespread and disproportionately impact Asian, Latinx, and Black New Yorkers.
