We are delighted that Green-Door was shortlisted for a Heritage Week Award.  The awards showcase the best of National Heritage Week 2015 and recognise the fantastic work of all the event organisers and volunteers that take part.

They said: "Green-Door brought the people of Leitrim into heritage buildings that have been renovated for contemporary living and to show examples of restored traditional Irish cottages." Land and cottage sought

A Green-Door participant was so taken with County Leitrim that he is considering relocation. He is looking for about 2 acres or slightly less with (preferably) a cottage-type dwelling, probably needing a lot of work!  This will be restored with Eco materials /design etc.
The budget is small €25-35,000 but this should be enough for him to buy a small plot somewhere. If anyone knows of somewhere please email us here at jo@inspirationalhomes.ie

Exploring the futures, opportunities and challenges of rural localities in 21st Century Europe

books (…). It is our habit to think outdoors – walking, leaping, climbing, dancing, preferably on lonely mountains or near the sea where even the trails become thoughtful.” (F. Nietzsche)

Call for abstracts (PDF) Abstracts of approximately 500 words, accompanied by a short bio, are invited for oral presentations. Deadline February 15th 2016

Rural Studio $20,000 house

An American version of Dominic Stevens' €25,000 house is being developed at the Rural Studio in Alabama.

The 20K House project began in 2005 as an ongoing Rural Studio research project to address the need for affordable housing in Hale County, provide an alternative to the mobile home, and accommodate potential homeowners who are unable to qualify for commercial credit. The 20K House project gets its name from the highest realistic mortgage a person receiving median Social Security checks can maintain. The objective of the Rural Studio students is to design and build a model home that could be reproduced on a large scale by a contractor and built for $20,000.  Rural Studio has designed sixteen versions of the 20K House with costs of approximately $12,000 for materials and $8,000 for contracted labor and profit.

Building affordable alternatives to mobile homes is certainly of interest to us here in Ireland.  Full story here: www.ruralstudio.org/initiatives/20k-house
