Editor's note

As the climate changes, so do our seas. In fact, Ken Collins has suggested that ten new large shark species could be moving into British waters in the future. But there’s no cause for alarm, he says. Their presence should instead be celebrated – and trigger efforts to better protect these magnificent creatures. Sticking with the watery theme, one of our Curious Kids asked: is there a place in the middle of the English Channel where the waves change direction? Claire Earlie has the answer.

Many fear the ports on the English Channel will see chaotic scenes if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal. Yesterday saw the British government publish a series of “technical notices” detailing preparations for a no-deal Brexit. Here, Karen Jackson and Oleksandr Shepotylo explain why such a scenario would be bad for Britain. Later today, we’ll bring you more expert analysis on what it could mean for different sectors.

Tobacco companies regularly commission research into the black market in cigarettes which shows it getting ever worse. They use this to lobby governments against tougher tobacco policies, from higher taxes to plain packaging. But according to a new paper by Allen Gallagher and Anna Gilmore, this industry data consistently overstates the problem. So is Big Tobacco up to its same old tricks?

When asked to describe someone with ADHD, most people likely think of a disruptive, hyperactive boy. But it also affects a large number of girls and adults. Florence Mowlem explains why ADHD in girls often goes unrecognised.
