Simultaneously, CPC applauds the 6-3 Supreme Court decision on Title VII that protects workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Announced on Friday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ new policy would cause devastating health and safety consequences for transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex, and non-binary individuals across New York and the U.S., enshrining systematic discrimination in federal policy and legitimizing the hateful rhetoric and violence these individuals already face. This is particularly true in Asian Americans & Pacific Islander (AAPI) and other communities of color, immigrant, and low-income communities, who face additional burdens, barriers to healthcare, and stigma. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, a quarter of trans Americans experienced issues with insurance related to their gender identity. Today’s separate, landmark Supreme Court decision protecting these same communities in the workplace is a first step that must be extended to our healthcare system.
