Packaging Recovery Labeling System Website Launches

In 2012, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition will launch a national pilot for a voluntary packaging labeling system aimed at improving recyclability communications. Next month we’ll be officially announcing the companies that have signed on for the pilot and will be testing the label nationally. As part of this project, we’ve developed the www.how2recycle.info website to provide information about the new packaging recovery label system and resources on local recycling availability. If you’re interested in more information about this effort, please visit our website or contact Anne Bedarf via email for more information.

SPC Fall Members-Only Meeting Recap

The SPC Fall Members-Only Meeting, which took place earlier this week in Dallas, Texas, was a tremendous success! We had nearly 200 attendees from SPC member companies come together to discuss the work of the SPC’s Member Working Groups as well as to learn about several ongoing SPC projects. Meeting festivities kicked-off on Monday with an informative tour of the Greenstar Recycling Center in Dallas and a very special Welcome Reception hosted at Frito Lay’s headquarters in Plano. Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting and helped to make this meeting such a success.

Welcome New SPC Project Associate Danielle Peacock

We are delighted to welcome Danielle Peacock to the GreenBlue team! As a Project Associate for the SPC, Danielle will primarily be responsible for conducting technical research to support the SPC’s growing portfolio of projects on packaging and sustainability. Danielle comes to us with an impressive background in recycling, which will be a great asset to her work with the SPC. While earning a Master of Public Administration at UNC Chapel Hill, she wrote her graduate thesis on the development of the construction and demolition recycling industry in North Carolina. Danielle also interned with the state’s non-regulatory recycling office, where she helped to develop recycling markets, provided technical assistance to local governments and businesses in the recycling industry, and analyzed state recycling trends.

Marine Debris: There’s an App for That

The following is an excerpt from a blog post by Project Manager Liz Shoch on GreenBlue's blog, In the Loop. Read all recent posts.

One of the most interesting things I learned while recently attending the Environmental Research and Education Foundation’s Regional Summit on Sustainable Solid Waste Practices and Research was how citizen science is taking a big leap forward thanks to the creation of the Marine Debris Tracker. The Marine Debris Tracker was developed by scientists at the University of Georgia, in cooperation with the Southeast Atlantic Marine Debris Initiative and NOAA. The app is available for either Android or iPhone, and allows users to report marine debris identified along our coastlines and waterways, or even out on the water by using geographical (GPS) location data. The data can be submitted in real time, or logged and submitted later to address both privacy concerns and areas where cell phone service is not available. Principle Investigator Jenna Jambeck noted that data has been submitted by a variety of people so far. In one case, she mentioned a contributor who walks the local beach in Maine every day and now reports debris on a daily basis. Read More
