University Updates

Welcome to your March newsletter, full of information, events and reminders

Mumps cases - have you had your MMR vaccination?

We’ve had some recent cases of mumps this term. While most people recover without the need for treatment, in some cases it can cause complications and it’s also contagious. It’s most recognisable by painful swellings at the side of the face under the ears, a bad headache and/or fever but you can read more about symptoms here. If you think you may have it, please go and see your doctor and if you have swollen glands please stay away from lectures and social gatherings for five days. If you’re not sure if you’ve had the MMR vaccine it’s recommended that you speak to the Student Health Centre (or your own doctor, if different) and arrange to receive it.

Meningitis - get protected

Infections such as meningitis can spread easily within university communities. Make sure you do what you can to protect yourself. All students under 25 years should make sure they have received the free Meningitis ACWY vaccination - contact your doctor's surgery to arrange an appointment if you have not yet had this vaccination. Find out about the symptoms of meningitis here.

National Student Survey

Don't forget the National Student Survey (NSS) is open for final year undergraduate students and we encourage you to complete it. This anonymous survey, run by independent agency Ipsos MORI, is your opportunity to feedback about your University experience and help shape future plans. The survey is open until 30 April. You can complete the survey here.

Brain Awareness Week - are you neurocurious?

This week is Brain Awareness Week  and events will take place at the University including a “Neuroscience: Ask me anything?” event, which will allow participants to interact and ask questions to neuroscientists at various stages of their career. The events are open to all who are neurocurious. See our Brain Awareness Week web page for more information.  #BAWExeter

Exeter - share the love

You study here day in day out, but have you taken the time to truly explore Exeter or to share it with family and friends? Now's your chance. During University holidays, we have guest accommodation available on campus and we're giving you a discount to share with family and friends, making a city break that bit more affordable. As you know, Exeter really is the small city with a big vibe. There’s so much to explore in the city and beyond - endless entertainment opportunities. When booking direct with us using a special code, you can access rates starting from just £49.50.

Cross Keys - now fully open

We’ve spent the last few months refurbishing the Cross Keys space (above), upgrading it to provide high-quality multipurpose space. We hope it will create a social heart for the St Luke’s Campus, which meets the needs of our growing and diverse community. Thank you for your patience while the work took place. The new space offers a ground floor kitchen featuring a range of hot and cold foods along with world favourites. The first floor space is available for quiet coffee meeting and study space, increasing the overall capacity of Cross Keys to around 250.  Please note that the first floor is fully accessible, either via the stairs or the lift. If you haven’t had a chance to have a look, please come and see it!

St. Luke’s library now accessible 24/7

In response to student feedback, the Library at St. Luke’s campus is now fully accessible 24/7. You can now access the book collections and study rooms whenever you choose to study. Access will be provided via your Unicard, so please carry this with you at all times. We’ve extended staffed hours and have expanded the ways you can contact us with questions, including a new online chat system. If you need support using library resources for your subject, or need advice on using research materials for your assignments, you can book an appointment with an Academic Liaison Librarian.

Traffic on Streatham Campus

From this Thursday 14 March there will be more lorries using Rennes Drive to access the East Park site. Initially, we're expecting around 100 lorry movements a day throughout March and into early April. As the project progresses the number of lorry movements will reduce, but are expected to be more than 50 a day. The vehicles will enter the campus from Prince of Wales Road and travel along Rennes Drive (between Amory and Streatham Court) before going on to the site. As a result, pedestrians and vehicles travelling along Rennes Drive may be asked to stop for a short period while lorries go into and leave the site. This will be carefully managed to ensure safety, however please take extra care when in the area, making sure you look carefully before travelling across the road.  If you have any queries email eastpark@exeter.ac.uk
