5 "New Foot" Tips

Hello!

Labor day is past.  I hope you have had a joy-filled summer even with some of the challenges we have all been facing in our lives lately NYC earthquakes, the first ever closing of the MTA, hurricanes, floods, etc...  It's been quite a ride for everyone.

Below are some easy answers to getting off on the right foot this fall.

This is the first of a series
of e-mails with a basic
checklist
for wellness for your feet.
My intention is to help you to
explore the idea of balancing:
body and mind though your feet.

Me: I am one of the few Holistic
Podiatrist's in existence today.
So, what is holistic podiatry and
what can be done in the field
toward your personal overall
well-being?

Below is a test for you and you get to measure the results.

First of all, contact me with questions no matter how silly or irrelevant you think these questions may be.  If you don't ask, you won't know.  Contact me now: (212) 755-3815.

Ok.  Let's get to your feet.

You: Please consider these five questions:

  1. How many hours per day do you spend on your feet?
  2. How many hours do you spend walking?
  3. Is your footwear selection comfortable?
  4. Do you massage your feet for a couple of minutes before retiring for the evening?
  5. When was the last time someone else checked your feet?

I'm sure you have answered these questions honestly.  You are your best student and teacher.  I thought it would be interesting and fun for you to hear how a doctor in podiatry would answer these questions.

Here they are:

1) Hours on my feet?
12-13 hours

2) Hours walking?
Well at least three of those 12-13 hours not including yoga and other forms of exercise.

3) Shoe selection?
For running or exercise, I use running shoes by ASICS.  On weekdays (work) I wear Diane B's (Upper East Side).  They're pricey but, good.  What I wear on my feet are as important to me as the condition my feet are in.  I do feel that we all want to be barefoot more often!! I am a fan of barefoot running although I DON'T recommend that for everyone.

4) Self Foot Massage?
I massage my own feet with essential oils for about 2 minutes every morning...this grounds me and connects me to my body. Sure enough at night, massaging the feet makes my entire body feel relaxed and prepares the body, mind and spirit for bed.

5) Last time someone else looked at my feet?
I do go to salon's for pedicures but I make sure that they have sterile practices set up and do bring my own, more natural (less toxins) nail polish. And most importantly, I went for a Reflexology session last week (first time in yrs...really fell behind on this one:( it did remind me of what I already know), but needed to feel it again for myself, that the feet are amazing channels for stress relief and energy flow throughout the body.

It's truly amazing to see what can shift when your feet get worked on!

Now you may be wondering
why I'm writing you this.  If you
spend that much time, or more
on your feet or working with
patients feet as I do, you want
to make sure you have a
little checklist

As you know:
We place the entire weight of our body on our feet everyday which becomes serious business when we have any kind of discomfort or pain.

Here's what one patient said:

"Dr. Sherri Greene has been my podiatrist for 15 years.  What makes her unique is that she practices holistic podiatry and energy healing.  She treats you as a whole person, not just your feet. Her practice includes supplements, homeopathy, cold laser therapy and energy healing.  Dr Greene looks at the root causes of your discomfort and seeks to address those in a gentle, healing manner.  I am grateful to her patience and commitment to me when I was recovering from foot surgery.  It was always a huge help to my healing to know she was there for me unconditionally."

These questions are important
to contemplate as most people
tend to just slip on their socks
and shoes basically neglecting
this important part of their body....that is until they start to HURT.

Maybe call me if your feet hurt: (212) 755-3815. It's a good idea.

Your Checklist.

1. Check out where you carry the weight on your feet. Ideally you want to evenly distribute the weight from front to back and outside to inside to insure proper posture and stance...this will in general relax the other stabilizing muscles above your feet.

2. Walking is a great form of exercise....pay attention to your breath and the feel of your feet as they touch the earth...this awareness is everything.

3. Wear comfortable shoes as often as you can...happy supported feet create a greater sense of well-being.

4. Even 2-3 minutes of massaging your own feet can shift your mind from worry/fear to courage/confidence in a matter of minutes. Consider receiving a full out Reflexology and/or Sacred Feet session (ask me about the details of this one)

5. Having someone else take a look at your feet from time to time is extremely beneficial because they may notice things that you may not. You could always wait until there is so much pain that you have to come and see me.

Prevention and awareness are the best medical remedies.

Let's get started on the right foot, today, or this week. : )
