British retail is in decline, but the scale of the problem is seldom seen as clearly as in these maps by Paul Greenhalgh. Both the amount of floor space and the value of retail premises have dropped by more than 20% across most of England and Wales – and that is going to cause major problems for local authorities, which increasingly rely on business rates to pay for local services.

As this is one of the longest intermittent fasting studies to date, it looks like researchers have finally debunked the long-standing notion that intermittent fasting is a miracle method for losing weight.
The legacy of President George H W Bush, who death was announced at the weekend, will of course be contested. Gina Yannitell Reinhardt met him on numerous occasions while she was working at the Bush School of Government at Texas A&M University. She fondly remembers an elder statesman and says his single-term presidency ushered in significant change domestically and internationally.
And look out for our special COP24 email later today as the latest international climate conference kicks off in Katowice, Poland.
