Since Cafe OTO opened nearly three years ago, we've kept a small wishlist of people who we'd love to have come and play. Loren Connors has long been at the top of that list, so its with a considerable amount of excitement that we can announce an exclusive, one-off, one-night-only appearance from one of the most singular guitarists of our time.
Guitarist Loren Connors was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1949. Best known as a composer and improviser, Connors has issued over 50 guitar records on his own imprints (Daggett, St. Joan, Black Label) since the late 1970s and over two dozen on other labels across the globe. He has recorded under the names Guitar Roberts, Loren Mattei, Loren MazzaCane Connors and other variations.
Connors' singular adaption of the blues is a distinct personal vision combining the Delta bottleneck sound and the ancestral blues voice (appearing as distortion, baying hounds or multi-tracked guitar), with hauntingly unexpected sounds.
Outside of Connors' three decades of solo work, he has collaborated with Suzanne Langille, Kath Bloom, Jim O'Rourke, Darin Gray, Alan Licht, Christina Carter, Keiji Haino, San Agustin, Jandek and many others, as well as leading the group Haunted House. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Hard-hitting tenor sax/drums duo from the depths of Italy, Virginia Genta and David Vanzan hit Cafe OTO fresh from a spell with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and ready to wreck havoc across the British Isles.
Penultimate Press and Cenatus present two disparate figures from the French experimental tradition of musique concrète: Two nights featuring musical outsider Ghédalia Tazartès and the next his mentor and friend, the theoretician, producer and musician Michel Chion.
This concert brings together a unique pairing - turntablist DJ SNIFF and voice and violin explorer C. SPENCER YEH aka Burning Star Core. Redefining our ideas of live instantaneous composition, they'll be joined for this date by hyperkinetic drummer Mark Sanders and John Richards on assorted home-brewed electronics.
Premiere UK screening of Vincent Moon's stunning portrait of underground Japanese folk artist Kazuki Tomokawa, with a special introductory talk by Alan Cummings
Two day residency split between Cafe Oto and the Barbican with one of Japan's most dynamic young drummers, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto. Yamamoto is therising star of Japan's experimental music scene and will be joined by fellow in-demand drummer Seb Rochford and his Polar Bear bandmate and note electronic musician Leafcutter John. For the Barbican show Yamamoto will play solo and in duet with the extraordinary pianist/keyboard player Pat Thomas.
Doyle is one of free music's true iconoclasts and has played with everyone from Sun Ra to Sonic Youth. We look forward to having him here for a very special one-off show here at Cafe OTO.
"Arthur Doyle is the most immediately recognizable sax player alive. His sound is a mixture of African folk song delicacy and pure Albert Ayler overload."Perfect Sound Forever.
