1961 Buick Invicta

"1961 Buick Invicta"  - by Rick Ireland

My wife’s parents purchased a new Buick Invicta on July 12, 1961. Unhappy with the dealer’s trade in offer, my Father-in-Law backed the Buick into his garage in 1963, and it never moved again during his lifetime.

In 1994 my Mother-in-Law gave us the car; along with the original window sticker, original title, Owner’s Guide, Owner’s Protection Plan booklet, multiple sales brochures, service manual, and their 1961 sales Contract with Dietrich Inc. in Wayne Michigan.

Delivery wasn’t included, and we filled a twenty yard dumpster clearly space to remove the car from its thirty one (31) year tomb.

The original plan was to preserve, not restore the car; but, as I gradually exposed more and more rust, the car earned my respect for surviving the years of neglect. At that point, I made her the promise that if I lived long enough, I would return her to past days of dignity and loyal service.

Thus began a twenty two (22) year love/hate relationship with an automobile I named “Victoria”.

DVAP helped supply Bumpers and misc chrome parts.

Every removable part and piece was sand blasted, and carefully protected with epoxy primer.

Gallons upon gallons of cleaning fluids were applied to remove decades of grime.

She’s not a show car, or a trailer queen, but after fifty three (53) years “Victoria” proudly roams the roads, flashing her polished stainless, fresh chrome, and new paint; winning admirers at every stop.

For me, a promise made, a promise kept.

P.S. Thanks to DVAP for providing all of the missing the parts lost, broken, and stolen through the years.
