Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s January 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights prepared by Michael Uhrich, the Beer Institute's Chief Economist:

Imports

  • Regular imported beer volume increased by 9.9% in January 2017 compared to January 2016 and is up 7.1% over the last 12 months.
  • Mexican imports grew by 8.3% in January 2017 compared to January 2016. In comparison, Mexican imports grew 16.2% in January 2016 compared to January 2015.
  • Imports from the Netherlands and Belgium were each up double digits in January 2017 compared to January 2016 after having been down double digits in January 2016 compared to January 2015.
  • According to the Commerce Department, the U.S. did not import any ciders or NA beers in January 2017--the first month that has happened during the time the Beer Institute has been tracking these metrics.

Exports

  • The Commerce Department reported exports of regular beer increased by 61% in January 2017 compared to January 2016 and are up 3% over the last 12 months.
  • Many of America's top beer export destinations increased dramatically. The volume of beer exported to Chile doubled in January 2017 compared to January 2016, and the volume of beer headed to Mexico nearly tripled from January 2017 compared to January 2016.
  • The U.S. exported no NA beer in January 2017--the first month this has happened in 16 years.
