October 2019 The ORAMA project focuses on optimising data collection for primary and secondary raw materials in Member States. A cornerstone to the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials is the development of the EU knowledge base on primary and secondary raw materials, commenced by a series of European-funded projects. ORAMA addresses specific challenges related to data availability, geographical coverage, accessibility, standardisation, harmonisation, interoperability, quality, and thematic coverage in Member States. It focuses on WEEE, batteries, ELV, other mixed metal wastes and mining waste datasets. SAVE THE DATE: ORAMA Final Event at Raw Materials Week, Brussels, 22nd November 2019As the project draws to its conclusion the final event presenting the activities, results and recommendations will take place on November 22nd in Brussels at the end of Raw Materials Week 2019. The half day event (9am start) is being organised in conjunction with GeoERA a partnership of 45 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 32 European countries that will deliver a geological service for Europe. Primary and secondary raw material themes will be covered by the ORAMA partners and the use of ORAMA results in future raw materials research will be discussed by colleagues from GeoERA. This free event will conclude with networking and lunch. For further information visit ORAMA's website. Register for the event here. Join the ORAMA network to receive updates and invitations from the ORAMA team. ORAMA Webinars proving popular and there is still chance to register!A series of webinars have been organised by the primary and secondary raw material teams within ORAMA to provide an opportunity for learning more about the data optimisation and data harmonisation for primary and secondary resources. The first webinar, on 30th September, focused on mining wastes followed by primary raw materials on 2nd October, each enjoying the attendance of around 50 people. Webinars follow for batteries & vehicles, on 16th October, and WEEE/PV Panels on 17th October. Register here. Further information on all of these webinars, including, for those that have already taken place, a link to the recording, presentations and technical guidance, are available via the ORAMA homepage. ![]() Final report and recommendations due to be releasedThe final report and recommendations of the ORAMA project is due to be released in the next month. Drawing together the full two years research work, the document will be available to delegates at the final event and to download from the ORAMA website following this event. Among other more specific recommendations, the ORAMA project recommends to establish more structured and continuous funding for realising and maintaining a European data infrastructure for tracking both primary and secondary raw materials. The current project-by-project based financing is insufficient and not sustainable to properly track and understand Europe’s strengths and weaknesses in the early resource intensive stages of global supply chains. The final report is the culmination of two years of research resulting in many reports that have been submitted to the European Commission and presented at conferences. There is a repository on the ORAMA website containing all reports from the project and these are available to download. ORAMA Workshop at the JRC Raw Materials Information System event - June 2019Fifty-five attendees from different sectors and institutions participated in the workshop hosted by the ORAMA consortium within the JRC facilities in Ispra, Italy, on 13th June. The workshop focused on sharing the outcomes reached in the project so far and the associated training. The training material, including presentations, reports and practical exercises) can be downloaded in the beginning of this article. During the morning session, the emphasis was on the collection, presentation and use of raw material data within a dedicated network in the EU (view programme). In the afternoon, parallel primary and secondary raw material training sessions introducing the detailed results and guidance for data were held. ORAMA stakeholders were given the opportunity to present their own results during a lunch time poster session. The workshop was followed by the ORAMA Project meeting in the Villa Borghi Hotel on the following day. ![]() ORAMA at E-waste ExpoORAMA will feature at the inaugural E-Waste World Conference and Expo being held in Frankfurt on 14th & 15th November. The conference will focus on 'closing the loop on the global e-waste challenge' and will feature ORAMA secondary raw materials expert, Michelle Wagner of United Nations University. Michelle will talk about her work in the ORAMA project on improving knowledge and securing secondary raw materials from the urban mine. More specifically, the presentation will focus on sharing the outcomes of the analysis performed for e-waste including a short description of the current situation of e-waste reporting and collection methods as well as a discussion of the different tools resulting from various case studies alongside prioritized recommendations. The presentation will also touch on the results for batteries and vehicles. This is an excellent opportunity to disseminate some of the results of the project to a wide audience and to be on the platform with many world class speakers. Further information about the E-Waste Expo is available here. ORAMA leaders meet with DG GrowDG GROW invited the ORAMA consortium to a meeting to discuss the project's results and how they could be taken into account in DG GROW’s future work. Participants included Milan Grohol, Rodrigo Chanes and Maria Nyberg from DG GROW and ORAMA’s project officer Véronique Woule-Ebongue from EASME. The ORAMA consortium was represented by coordinator Perttu Mikkola and scientific coordinator Pasi Eilu together with work package leaders Tom Bide, Michelle Wagner and Daniel Cassard along with Jaco Huisman of JRC. In the meeting ORAMA partners presented the project’s key results and recommendations and this was followed by discussion of their implementation. Specific focus was given to recommendations that could be implemented in the near future for quick enhancements of the current situation in data management at the European level. A further message from DG Grow is that the new Commission is currently compiling its policies and pertinent results from the project should be submitted for consideration for inclusion.
