The latest Community Panel determinations about community awareness ads

The Ad Standards Community Panel has dismissed complaints about two bushfire community awareness ads. Complaints about these community service messages had raised concerns about graphic images of burnt animals and abandoned pets.

The Community Panel found that while the content would be upsetting to some, the ads did not breach the AANA Code of Ethics.

How to nominate awesome ads for recognition
In a curious twist Ad Standards is asking advertisers and the community to nominate awesome ads which are creating #kinderconditions in advertising.

The campaign is into the second round with the winner to be announced in March. So if you’ve made - or seen - a great ad which raises the bar by challenging clichés and stereotypes go to the Ad Standards website today and nominate a kinder ad for kudos.

Announcing the most complained about ads
The release of the annual listing of most complained about ads of the year shows ongoing community concerns in 2019 about sexualised content in ads, and ads seen to discriminate against or vilify people.

Ad Standards also released the most complained about ads of the decade showing an eclectic mix of ads across the wide range of social issues covered by the advertising codes administered by Ad Standards.

Reminder about alcohol advertising
A reminder to advertisers about specific rules in place for the responsible advertising of alcohol across all channels. This follows the latest report from ABAC showing increased breaches, with the majority of these related to alcohol advertising on social media.

All complaints about alcohol advertising are first lodged with Ad Standards. Please visit the Ad Standards website for more information on the co-regulation of alcohol advertising in Australia.

New Ad Standards Community Panel members appointed
Four new community members have been appointed to the Ad Standards Community Panel.
The Community Panel is responsible for considering complaints from the community about advertisements across all mediums and its members represent the wide cross-section of community opinion.
