Reception: October 23, 6 - 8pm.

Wendy Kveck, JK Russ and Erin Stellmon will fill the Marjorie Barrick Museum with an exhibition of their art. These three Las Vegas artists offer unique bodies of work that spring from a common practice of breaking down their subject, then reorganizing and reordering the pieces. FALL EVENTS

VISITING ARTIST LECTURE SERIES

The UNLV Visiting Artists Lecture Series features a diverse array of some of the most compelling artists and thinkers working in the art world today. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our BFA and MFA students.

Lectures take place every Thursday evening starting at 7 pm and are open to the public. They are held in the Barrick Museum Auditorium.

EMERGING SCHOLARS LECTURE

Dr. Anna Arabindan- Kesson, Princeton University

The Currency of Cotton: Art, Materiality, and Memory
October 1, 1 - 2:25 pm. HFA 257

This talk will explore the visual and material implications of the nineteenth century cotton trade, and its global networks, for our understanding of race and representation in the United States. Focusing in particular on cotton’s intimate connection to slavery this paper juxtaposes historical material alongside contemporary art works to show how artists and writers used cotton, like a connective tissue, to materialize, problematize and re-imagine histories of empire, and definitions of a global imaginary.

TALK: A Conversation with Brent Sommerhauser

Sommerhauser and Barrick Staff will discuss drawing, physics, and the methods and tools that are used in Sommerhauser's studio. These methods and tools can be related across disciplines, from art, to math, and to language itself. Experience a redefinition of how the pencil has been used historically and how a drawing is made. A video of the process used to create his drawing "Arch" will be on view in the Barrick's lobby. Audience members are encouraged to participate.

September 16 at 6 - 7 pm in the Barrick's Main Gallery
