Peter & the Wolf To Be Performed At Bok Tower Gardens

A world premiere of film, carillon and narrator together in concert

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Bok Tower Gardens will present a new theatrical event of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and The Wolf, three nights only on March 10, 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. beneath the oak canopy of surrounding the Singing Tower Carillon. Accessible parking, shuttle service, and seating for guests will be available.

The 1936 classic children's composition comes to life in a new way as Bok Tower Gardens Carillonneur Geert D'hollander performs Prokofiev's famous symphony of animals to the 2006 Oscar-winning short film and a live narrator. This performance will be the first film, carillon and narrator performed version of Peter and The Wolf in the world.

"I wanted to do something that has never been done before, that is unique to the Bok Tower Carillon," states D'hollander. "Prokofiev's style of colorful music and energetic compositions has greatly influenced my career, and I can't wait to transform the carillon into a full orchestra."

This challenging arrangement is the largest made by D'hollander. The new composition is 45 pages and can only be performed on American grand carillons - the heaviest and largest carillons in the world with a wide range of bells, like the Bok Tower Carillon. The range of bells is needed for this presentation to perform the contrasting sounds which represent the characters of the story.

"You need low bells to sound like the French horn for the wolf and little bells like a flute for the bird. All 60 bells in this carillon will be used during this performance, from the 12-ton Bourdon to the 16 lb. treble bell," states D'hollander.

Two carillonneurs are needed to perform this complicated score, so D'hollander will be joined by Joey Brink, Carillonneur of University of Chicago for the three performances. "After studying as a Collins Carillon Fellow last year at Bok Tower Gardens, I am unbelievably excited to return to play the carillon with Geert D'hollander, one of my greatest mentors and friends," says Brink. In addition, a conductor will be in the playing cabin of the carillon, while the film is shown downstairs on the Tower Lawn.

Tickets are on sale now online or by calling our event line at 863.734.1222. Ticket prices are $15/person; $8/student (ages 18 & under). The 2006 film "Peter & the Wolf" is not rated by the MPAA.
