Happy New Year! We look forward to helping you and your family experience the best health and function that life can offer in 2013!
With the holiday season behind us, we are reminded that following all of the festivities is the start of a brand new year. With this New Year comes the promise of new possibilities and resolutions to change old habits, hopefully for the better. While we all start the year with so much hope and optimism the majority of us tend to fail in turning these initial successes into meaningful and long lasting lifestyle changes. Why then do so many of us then fail to maintain our New Year’s resolutions. There are a number of reasons why we do not stick to our well intentioned goals but there are several key components to ensure the greatest success.
FIRST
Make sure to set reasonable goals that are achievable. Many of us set goals that are unrealistic and set ourselves up for failure from the start. Starting an exercise program for example is a common goal, but many of us are unrealistic in our expectations regarding the intensity and frequency of our program. Be sure to start with a plan that will work well with your schedule which allows you to progress down the road. Even if you plan to start only a flexible three times a week initially this will help to make sure that you can accomplish your goal without giving up all together.
SECOND
Make sure the goal is important to you. If you set a resolution which is of little value to yourself and you are only doing it to better conform to others opinions it will make it much more difficult to find motivation several weeks into the new year.
THIRD
Setting a target can be of great benefit and helps to keep you on track. In the case of starting an exercise program you could try and find a charitable event several months away to participate in, such as a fun run, to give you a goal to strive for.
FOURTH
Be sure to talk to friends, family, and others who are interested in making similar resolutions as a way to improve your ability to stick to your goal and better ensure success.
Making lifestyle changes is never easy but with realistic goals and forethought you can be successful in whatever change you hope to achieve. Starting an exercise program is a very common goal but can be daunting to do on your own. Be sure to ask your Physical Therapist for their recommendations to tailor a program that fulfills your individual needs. Physical Therapists are movement experts who can help you not only live a more pain free but also a healthier and happier life.
