Master of Tertiary Education Management graduates' contribution to public debate

We're proud to announce that the third special edition of the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management  featuring papers by our Master of Tertiary Education Management graduates is now available (from Routledge). According to guest editor Geoff Sharrock, there is a strong practitioner focus to the works, which try to make sense of the operating context by identifying a problem and proposing or testing a possible solution. Two of the papers in particular - Tim Skinner's work on bullying in regional universities and Chrissa Favaloro's paper on the effectiveness of marketing spend relative to enrolments - caught the attention of the media recently (see media mentions below).

We'd like to congratulate all the authors, and Geoff for his tireless work in putting this fantastic edition together. We believe that each and every paper in the Journal can and will continue to contribute to public debate on our ever changing sector.

Investigating quality teaching in the Victorian VET sector - call for participants

A team of researchers from the LH Martin Institute and the Melbourne Graduate School of Education are leading a research project, funded by the Victorian Department of Education and Training, on what makes quality teaching in VET. 

The first phase of the research is completed and includes an extensive examination of national and international capability frameworks, and focus group discussions with teachers, organisational development managers and students from across the VET sector. The next phase of the research will involve one-on-one interviews and observations with recognised expert teachers.

LH Martin Institute Director Leo Goedegebuure and Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education Director Richard James wrote a joint opinion piece on the way forward for university funding reforms in 'After Pyne flop, Australia's tertiary sector needs a redesign', The Australian, 7 October 2015.

 

Frank Larkins' latest analysis (featured above) provided the basis for the article 'Unis nimble under funding pressure', The Australian, 14 October 2015.

 

Master of Tertiary Education Management (MTEM) graduate Tim Skinner of Charles Darwin University wrote an article based on his work for the course entitled 'Bullying in regional universities is a serious problem that needs addressing', The Conversation, 19 October 2015. This was further reported on in 'Study finds culture of bullying at regional universities', The Australian, 21 October 2015.

 

Another Master of Tertiary Education Management graduate, Chrissa Favaloro of Australian Catholic University, had her course paper on universities' marketing spend picked up by the media in 'Universities' marketing spend 'not reflected' in enrolments', The Australian, 21 October 2015.

University of New Mexico, a flagship research university in a relatively poor US state, is trying to help more of its at-risk students graduate by measuring their non-cognitive skills like motivation and stress management, Inside Higher Ed, 28 September.

 

UK universities, including Warwick, Edinburgh and the London School of Economics, have announced scholarships for refugee students, The Guardian, 3 October.

 

Cyber attacks on Hong Kong universities are reportedly on the rise, particularly in the wake of Occupy protests last September, South China Morning Post, 4 October.

 

Speaking of cyber attacks, this article asks whether campus networks can ever be secure, having to balance between academic openness and computer security, The Atlantic, 11 October.

 

The top ranked debating club in the world, Harvard University's debate team, was out debated by a group of inmates from the Eastern New York Correctional team on the topic of schooling for children of illegal immigrants, BBC, 7 October.

 

What is wrong with France's university system? A lot, according to this article. Among them, lack of enrolment transparency and lack of global outlook,  The Local,  9 October.
