Newsletter - Tuesday 8th September 2015

Thanks again to those that responded to my recent Redland City Survey that was distributed across the City. The survey is now closed and I'm in the process of trawling through the responses to provide some feedback shortly.

Some other news over the past several weeks in our community and Council is outlined below.

Draft Redland City Plan 2015

Redland City Council is encouraging the community to be part of the City’s future by viewing and having their say on the Draft Redland City Plan 2015, which will be released for public consultation from 14 September until 27 November - almost double the statutory minimum of 30 business days.

The State Government directed Council to make key amendments to the draft city plan prior to public consultation. The new plan is an easier document to read and understand than the current scheme.

It also uses terminology that is consistent across Queensland and utilises up-to-date data on a range of issues from storm tide, flood and fire hazard mapping to bushland habitats.

Submissions will be able to be made electronically or in hard copy.  Since 2014 Council has run a range of information sessions, provided information in the local media and its website regarding city plan studies and how city plans impact residents including hazard mapping, housing, economic growth, infrastructure and environment and heritage.

Consultation plans will be widely advertised and include interactive online engagement tools where residents will be able to view details right down to street and lot level. There will also be mail-outs identifying key changes in a resident’s area, website and social media information, open house events at key mainland and island locations, local pop-up sessions and meet-the-planner booking opportunities.

From the 14 September, have your say on the Draft Redland City Plan 2015.

Straddie Update

Council seeks urgent Straddie transition briefing

Council has had the first of the briefings from the State Government on its plans for North Stradbroke Island’s transition from sand mining to an alternative economy.  A further briefing is expected later this month.

I am concerned with the scattergun approach over the past five years  and want it made clear what the State Government is planning and how that will on impact on Straddie and the rest of Redland City.

New Wastewater Treatment Plant for Point Lookout

Construction on a $12.8 million, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant on North Stradbroke Island will commence before the end of the year with leading Australian engineering contractor Downer Tenix appointed to build the plant.

Detailed design is now underway, with construction expected to commence in November this year and the project completed by early 2017.

Redland Weather Station

Yesterday morning I opened the new Redland weather station, along with state member for Redland Matt McEachan and Bureau of Meteorology Regional Director Rob Webb.

The station, based at Cleveland Waste Water Treatment Plant, provides real-weather information about the Redlands, which has previously relied on weather information from 40km away at Brisbane Airport.

The temperature, wind direction and speed, rainfall and weather patterns in Redlands will be vital for emergency planning and disaster response, including decisions around evacuations.

Retro Markets & RedFest

Retro Markets

Congratulations to all who were involved in the inaugural monthly Retro Eat Boutique Markets at Wellington Point recently. A remarkable 11,500 people attended, injecting an estimated $1 million-plus into the local economy.  A highlight was the hundreds of classic and collectible cars which arrived at the markets, which boasted 60 stands and food vans.

RedFest

Further accolades to the committee and volunteers who brought us RedFest last weekend.  As a community festival – delivered by the community for the community – RedFest plays a significant role in the cultural life and identity of the Redlands and one in which Council is pleased to support each year.  I'm informed that the festival was once again a resounding success.

Events such as these are a priority for Council as they deliver economic benefit while providing a great destination for both locals and visitors.

Quandamooka Country Becomes City’s largest Land for Wildlife Area

Almost 1400 hectares of bushland on North Stradbroke Island will be further enhanced after the largest Land for Wildlife declaration in the city was finalised recently.

Council Super Savers

The Information Management Group and Procurement have showed the way when it comes to making the most of ratepayer dollars, saving more than $400,000 with two contracts. They have shaved off more than $100,000 annually from their Microsoft contract, and saved more than $300,000 a year on the new print management contract.

Also congratulations to Corporate Governance, which has saved another $100,000 through renegotiating Council’s insurance contract.

Boost for school chaplains

About 200 people recently attended the 13th annual Redland City Mayoral Prayer Breakfast.

The popular event which raises funds for school chaplaincy programs across the Redlands, brings residents, business and community leaders together in prayer. It surpassed last year’s fundraising effort, raising about $14,000.

The chaplaincy programs supported by the breakfast have the potential to change lives by providing guidance and helping local students fulfil their potential as well as opening the door to spirituality.

I congratulate all involved who helped deliver this fabulous result.

Thankyou

In closing, thank you for your support so far during this term of Council, and I look forward to maintaining that support into the future as I deliver on my commitments.

I encourage you to stay informed via my Website, Facebook or Twitter, and don't hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.  Feel free to pass on this information to anyone else who has an interest in the Redlands.

This newsletter was prepared and paid for by myself and no ratepayers funds were utilised in its production.
