Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the August 2017 State-by-State Shipments to Wholesalers Report. Please note changes to historical volumes as some state totals may have changed with newly released state-level data.

Below are some key points from the report:

  • Beer shipment volume decreased by 3.4% in August 2017 on the same number of selling days compared to August 2016.
  • Beer shipment volume is now down 1.4% year-to-date through August and down 1.5% over the last 12 months.
  • Hurricane Harvey severely impacted August's beer shipment volume. Shipment trends in Texas and Louisiana each showed double-digit declines during August. Although we don’t have shipment data below the state level, depletions data shows severe declines in coastal Texas and Louisiana.
  • Distributor inventory levels were also affected. Depletions outpaced shipments by a wide margin in August, especially in Texas and Louisiana, which were hardest hit by Harvey.
  • On net, the data suggests that distributor inventories ended the month of August at below-normal levels.
