Two hires mark strategic plan progressWSU Vancouver’s 2016 – 2021 strategic plan calls for two critical hires in the near term. The first one, under Goal 4: Equity and Diversity, is a full-time director of equity and diversity. Obie Ford, III has been hired to fill that position and will start work April 17. Obie joins us from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. where he served as director of inclusion, diversity and equity. In his new role, Obie will strategically advance equity/diversity initiatives and goals at WSU Vancouver. He will provide leadership to align existing efforts into a cohesive strategy, and use data and research to increase institutional effectiveness and promote accountability. Carolyn Long, associate professor in the School of Politics, Philosophy and Public Affairs, has been hired as director of strategic partnerships as of March 1. This half-time position is called for under strategic plan Goal 5: Community. During this two-year appointment, Carolyn will implement, coordinate and promote campus partnership activities, and have primary responsibility for representing WSU Vancouver’s Community goal. Lockdown drill scheduled for ThursdayWSU Vancouver Public Safety and Emergency Management will conduct a campus-wide lockdown drill at 10:45 a.m. March 9. The drill will be announced using the mass notification system and campus public address systems. It will last 15 – 20 minutes. An “all clear” announcement will signal the conclusion. During the drill, exterior campus doors will be locked, and safety and facilities staff will monitor for mechanical and user compliance. The drill will test mechanical door systems, mass notification, and public address systems as well as provide opportunity for lockdown procedures practice for staff, students, faculty and visitors. Compliance by closing and locking classroom and office doors, covering windows, silencing cell phones and computers, turning out lights and sheltering away from entrances and windows while forming a plan to attack an intruder with hostile intent is encouraged but not mandated. WSU Vancouver IT will visit you during Spring BreakMarch 13 – 17 Vancouver IT will visit every room on campus to identify WSU telephone and computer equipment, and to install new emergency contact stickers on phones. Vancouver IT staff will work with teams of student workers in coordination with campus department representatives. If there is someone in your department who Vancouver IT should coordinate with, please send that name to patti.paris@wsu.edu as soon as possible. Vancouver IT will work to be as unobtrusive as possible while completing this information security initiative. "Student Matters" on exhibit in the Library through April 17Students at WSU Vancouver have been sharing art with the campus community since 1997. Today, new fine arts coursework provides an opportunity for students to practice sculpture and 3D design. “Student Matters” represents an array of challenges in the study of three-dimensional form and in the presentation of objects. The students, who represent almost every major, study not only sculpture, but also work on problems relating to structure and form, consideration of space and the made environment, fabrication methods and, of course, matter.
