What a Long Green Trip it's Been!

Santa Clara Green Power had humble beginnings back in 2004 when the program was first launched.  But, one glance at the chart of annual green power megawatt-hours supplied (see right) reveals that the program has grown ever since by leaps and bounds.  Santa Clara is now the third largest Green Power Community in the nation as recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, Santa Clara Green Power has landed on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) 2010 Top 10 list of utility green power programs for the sixth year in a row! Santa Clara Green Power received these accolades thanks to customer participation! Check out the rankings on NREL’s website and thank you for making this program shine!

Santa Clara Green Power is part of a large and growing voluntary market for renewable energy. In fact, according to the most recent data from NREL, total sales of renewable energy in voluntary markets exceeded 30 million MWh in 2009 - an increase of 17% from 2008.Facebook Like Button

Plaza Suites Increases its Purchase of Santa Clara Green Power

Join us in congratulating long-time Santa Clara Green Power participant The Plaza Suites hotel for increasing its purchase to the quarter-turbine level! The Plaza Suites’ renewable power commitment – 804 megawatt-hours annually – represents one quarter of the annual electricity output of a utility-scale wind turbine, and matches over half of their annual electricity consumption. The Plaza Suites’ clean power commitment will provide environmental savings by annually preventing the release of 490 tons of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. This is the climate impact equivalent to taking 81 cars off the road for a year. “From green power to our energy saving linen program to our reclaimed water landscaping irrigation system, The Plaza Suites is always looking for ways to conserve energy and minimize our impact on the environment,” said Jean-Philippe Rollet, General Manager.

How Much Green Power is there in California?

For those of you who really like to geek-out on energy data, check out the California Independent System Operator (ISO) website. It has real-time data on renewable energy production in California. It's a complement to the older Renewables Watch website. Together, those two sites provide a nice snapshot of how much renewable energy is being generated in California compared to our demand for electricity.
