WAYJO with Ed Partyka @ Northbridge Plaza & Bron & The Velvet Lounge, 25 March 2012
Dear You,
This is the way I’ve wanted to start one of these messages, but I never did it til now.
Sunday night after the wedding, I was in a tangerine dress, with my hair out, and thinking about the past. The past, when I would skate down to the Hydey on my own in the night, to see a band I didn’t know. Whatever band. Just all alone.
I knew I had to write one of these, and I hadn’t seen any shows yet, so I wandered into the city. I went to the Bird first, and looked in the door, but something made me turn away. So I kept wandering in the city, and to the grass in the middle of Northbridge, with the big screen. That’s where I ended up, wondering if I’d see Drew or his dad who sleep out in the night on the streets, and go to the grass to be with other people.
There was no Drew, and no Drew’s dad. But there was jazz.

Ermine Coat & More @ The Velvet Lounge, Sunday March 25
I don’t really know what you’re meant to do on a Sunday night, but I don’t think you’re supposed to go to an avant-rock gig at the Velvet Lounge. Luckily we at Cool Perth Nights have always spat in the stony face of tradition. We’ve ritualistically wiped our shoes on the tablecloth of conformity. We’ve smeared peanut butter (extra crunchy) on the white yatching pants of contemporary convention. And we feel we’ve come out better, stronger, happier for it. So tonight I wave aside those hovering shoulder-devils of idle hermitage temptations and glide north to The Flying Scotsman.
The first thing that happens is that I have a chat to Dan Griffin – former drum-thrummer of Clean Leaving, general cultural can-doer, avid recreational cyclist, all round good bloke.

Felicity Groom: on tour
Greetings from Geraldton. Home of the fisherman and their big knives.
I didn’t have any pre- conception about this place. No idea in my minds eye what it would be like. I suppose if there were any ideas I had cultivated it was that I thought it would be a little smaller. The place feels massive. Maybe that’s because we’re staying 3 kms out of town and I don’t have a car of my own… or maybe it’s because the tour manager and I have been for a couple of runs along the water and she holds a pace that can not be reckoned with… so I spend most of my time wondering when the run will end.

Medea
at subiaco arts centre
MEDEA
by Euripides
Directed by Michelle Trainer
and starring Andy Blaikie, Anna Brockway, Stephen Lee, Angelique Malcolm and Janet Pettrigrew
An eye for an eye, and a heart for a heart?
Medea’s husband Jason is leaving her for a younger woman, and she is hurt, angry and shamed. Medea wants revenge, but just how far is too far?
Medea is a universal story about acting on the evil thoughts we’ve all had about our ex. Re-imagined in Perth’s western suburbs, Euripides famous tragedy is brought (a little too) close to home.

Tribute Night: New work by Patrick Miller
at ok gallery, northbridge
In his first solo exhibition Patrick Miller presents a body of work exploring the multilayered history of light: as a physical force, a cultural phenomenon and a philosophical proposition.
Tribute Night features a series of pieces that sit at the nexus of art and design and science and sentiment, shelves, tables and wall hangings that examine both literal and figurative illumination and reflection. From the proto-scientific alchemists in search of the philosopher's stone to the proliferation of contemporary designers producing countless boutique lamps, each of Miller's elegant, minimal and meticulously handmade objects is a dedication to those that have lit the way and allowed us to take the light home.
EXHIBITION RUNS: 29th March - 29th April, 2012
