Artswork: South East Bridge enews
November 2016

Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews. This month, we have news to share from exciting new and ongoing projects, with partners including Turner Contemporary (Kent), Readipop (Reading) and Music Education Hubs in Southampton and Portsmouth. This month also saw the first meeting of collective minds as part of the STEAM Network in North Hampshire, with six schools joining together to explore ways to increase the presence of arts and culture in their curriculums. You can find out more about this and much more in the links below.

As always, our resources are available to download absolutely free of charge - simply register on the Artswork site for full access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also be granted access to discounted rates on a selection of our upcoming professional development courses.

As 2016 draws to a close, we would like to wish you all our best wishes and a happy new year. We look forward to continuing our mission to increase arts and cultural access for children and young people across the South East, regardless of their background or circumstance, in 2017 and beyond.

Here's to a bright new year,

The Start project, run by Turner Contemporary and Children & the Arts with support from Artswork, will involve children aged 5-14 travelling to the gallery to work with artists, dancers, photographers, archivists and ceramicists as they explore, learn and create artworks around the local story of the Pudding Pan Pots.

The Start programme is supported by Artswork as part of our Partnership Investment work.

Our Arts Award Festival Investments Programme: Readipop Festival

"Each July, Readipop runs a three-day, family friendly arts festival in Reading on the banks of the River Thames. This year, a grant from Artswork gave us the opportunity to run an extensive Arts Award project with local primary schools in the run up to Readipop Festival and to incorporate Arts Award into our festival. We were able to offer ukulele, music technology and Samba workshops, Samba was especially popular with the young people because they were all really excited about the Rio Olympics. Young people really enjoyed the workshops and teachers were impressed with the way samba playing encouraged transferable skills like teamwork."

RECAP | Arts Award Leadership Network at Solent Cultural Conference

On November 10th, trainer Helen Le Brocq gave an inspiring presentation on the benefits of Arts Award, at the Solent Cultural Conference in Portsmouth. Around 150 people were in attendance at the talk, which was followed by a surgery session for anyone needing additional support, information or advice on Arts Award. Organised by Southampton Music Hub and Portsmouth Music Hub, the day provided an opportunity to speak to teachers, music practitioners and cultural organisations about the Award, focusing primarily on its impact and benefits within school-based settings.

CASE STUDY | Primary School children find A Sense of Self in Kent

Art and Design in schools is in a challenging position, with far greater emphasis placed on achievements in English and Maths. The implications of this stretch across the curriculum, meaning that in the last five years, less and less time has been spent on Art and Design.

In Kent, the Sense of Self project was developed following the success of Shepway Teaching School Alliance’s A Sense of Place project (2014-15), which nurtured primary schools to develop their arts provision through connecting with art and artists in their locality.

Government "cash injection" allows Music Education Hubs to reach "even more pupils"

Practical music teaching in England (delivered by a network of 121 hubs) is secure for another four years, ministers have announced.

The hubs, first set up in 2012, allow children to play instruments, sing in choirs or play in bands, but continued funding has been uncertain. Now the government has announced £300m to last over the next four years.

The Musicians Union said the cash would be welcome relief to music teachers “struggling” in insecure jobs.

Composer Lord Lloyd-Webber said it was a “welcome first step towards improving funding for music and the arts” in schools.
