The “rags to riches” story about a poor boy and his cat. Can you spot the good fairies and the terrible rat? Last year’s panto jokes and music will be ‘trumped-up’ to reflect life in Wilmslow. We shall be performing twice at 1200hrs and 1400hrs. We have performed there twice before and it is a really wonderful occasion! Semitone Studios live-On Friday 21 December at 8 pm the featured artists at the Semitone Studios live music will be Hullabaloo. Following their set we will as usual have an open mic. All welcome. We meet through the Wilmslow Guild's 'Singing For Fun' programme and perform around North Cheshire and South Manchester. We sing a wide varietty of styles from folk and pop to classical. Hullabaloo is led by Musical Director Taylor Giacoma, who also directs other choirs for mixed voices and a womens choir at the Wilmslow Guild.
Day schools taking place in January Saturday 26 January Italian at the Cinema 10- 1 This one day workshop will explore an Italian film while practising the language. The viewing of the film will be in fact accompanied by activities devised to comment on the film in an interactive way. Intermediate level at least required, but everybody is welcome. (Film with subtitles in English or Italian). Modern calligraphy 10-4 Try 'Modern Calligraphy' for a day. This is a more informal style of lettering using a flexible, pointed dip pen and is relaxing and fun. We will start with a basic alphabet and begin adapting the script to develop a more personal style. (There will be a small materials charge on the day). Jewellery & Silversmithing- Chainmaking 10-4 This class is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. Learn to make your own chains, whether to incorporate into another piece of jewellery or as a stand-alone chain. Making your own chains is a valuable and rewarding skill to learn. In this class you will be taught to make your own chains in copper and silver. (Silver will be available to purchase on the day.) Italian Cookery School 9.30-12.30 A fun and relaxed way to learn Italian whilst cooking simple, tasty and original dishes you would only find in a typical Italian family kitchen. Please bring suitable containers to take this delicious food away with you. Everything else is supplied. You will be cooking a selection of the following- Pizza dei forti e pizza con nutella, Gnocchi, Pollo alla cacciatora, Torta di mandorle Polenta, Tiramisu, Baccala alla fiorentina e cavolo nero tarallucci al vino Manchesher Migrants - The Irish Community 10-4 This day school charts the development of the community, and topics covered will include: The geographical origins of the community; reasons for leaving Ireland; reactions to the growth of the community The location of the Irish community over the years Daily life in the Manchester Irish community – housing, family life, occupations, culture, welfare, faith Community leaders and characters, and the overall contribution to Manchester's life and achievements This day school will bring vividly to life one of the most vibrant and historic migrant communities in Manchester, and is the perfect precursor to the Manchester Migrants Road Trip, which will take place in the summer term. How Machiavellian was Machiavelli? 10-4 Does Machiavelli get a bad press? The dictionary defines 'Machiavellian' as describing an unscrupulous schemer. But how apt a description is that of the fifteenth century Florentine writer, Niccolo Machiavelli? We will put Machiavelli in historical context, examine his relationship with the Medicis and Borgias of his day, and assess the impact of his most famous book The Prince, as well as some of his other literary works. In this day school, we will also consider Machiavelli's influence on people as diverse as William Shakespeare and Richard Nixon. Don't get it right get it written. 10-4 A writing techniques workshop that frees you from the terror of the first draft. If you dream of becoming a writer, but can't seem to get past first base, this course will help you abolish the fears and desire for perfection that may be holding you back. Learn how to access your creativity and bring your stories to life. We will primarily focus on fiction but many of the techniques can also be used for non fiction, life writing and memoirs. What is the course content? The facilitator is a professional Careers Adviser, former University Lecturer and an experienced teacher of adult learners. The course content draws on current thinking and research from the disciplines of Career Guidance, Positive Psychology and the "Well Being" agenda. The content is underpinned by three main themes: · Effective decision making · Raising awareness of what contributes to Well Being in later life · Generating ideas and providing information specifically relating to choices for the 50+ age group. What the course does not include. · Any detailed reference or advice relating to financial planning · Any advice on pensions. How is the course delivered? The course is delivered drawing on a combination of teaching and learning styles. It is interactive, informal and supportive. Participants will work both in small groups and individually. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts experiences but can contribute as much or as little as they want. There is a combination of input from the trainer and facilitated exercises, which course participants "try out" in a safe and supportive environment. There is usually a lot of good humour and laughter! Other characteristics of the course · There is an emphasis on providing tools and techniques to help individuals explore and clarify thoughts, feelings and priorities in order to ensure more informed decision -making. · The course materials include case studies and pen pictures complied using oral history techniques to record the current and real-life experiences of local people experiencing transitions in their fifties. Beginners are very welcome. Class commences 28 February, last session 4 April 2019 This course alternates between life drawing, sketching the clothed figure, drawing large (and small) still lives and architecture. We will practise the craft of sketching by channelling our observations of the model or object into a structured drawing process. This can be learnt by all! We will learn how to draw simplified shapes of what we observe and gradually make our drawings more complex by correcting previous mistakes and adding extra detail. We will also explore how to use lines to bring feeling and emotion to our artwork, and combine all this with colour. Craft Calligraphy for Beginners Mondays at 10am Introducing a complete beginner's class starting Monday January 14 2019. This is a 9 week course. We can all write, but wouldn't it be wonderful if, in this rapidly changing world of electronic media, we could write beautifully for pleasure using traditional materials? Calligraphy at Wilmslow Guild welcomes beginners and here you will learn the basic skills to help you achieve exactly that. Cake Decoration for Beginners Thursdays at 7pm A comprehensive 10 week course covering all of the basics of cake decoration including the newest techniques and methods. The classes are informal and relaxed and based around tutor demonstrations and individual, guided work. No previous cake decorating experience is required but a basic competence in baking is preferable as students are asked to bring along their own baked bases to decorate. It's brilliant fun, non-competitive and should be relaxing- we are not The Bake-Off!! History Historical Controversies Thursdays at 10am In 10 illustrated lectures we will look at controversial historical topics ranging through world history. Subjects will include - Akhenaten and Hatshepsut, were they aberrations in Ancient Egypt? Is Fake News new? Was Churchill right about Attlee's modesty? And have successful women been whitewashed out of history? The Eighteenth Century – establishing the modern world Wednesdays 1.30pm A century of enormous change. Britain becomes a nation, experiences Transport, Agricultural and early Industrial Revolutions, fights rivals and both builds and dismantles an Empire. Enlightened European despots dominate in some parts of Europe but France's failure to change leads to cataclysmic Revolution. Bog bodies - The Iron Age in Cheshire Mondays 7.30pm This course will look at the some of the new materials that have been uncovered in the last 30 years from bog bodies to gold coins, hillforts to roundhouses in Cheshire. Placing this in a British context, we will look at the evidence for settlement and ritual exploring whether this was a warrior society or something more complex. Week one Introduction – Prehistory in the North West: An Introduction Dance & Fitness Line Dancing for Complete Beginners Fridays 11.15am This class is new for January. Fun line dances, easy routines, great music! No partner needed. It's great exercise for the mind and body. Dance instructor Patricia is well known world-wide for her choreography and tuition and has won many awards. Free Exercise to Music Wednesdays 2pm at Knutsford Methodist Church These classes fill up really quickly so we're excited to announce an extra venue in Knutsford. A free exercise to music class for people aged 50 and over. The class is low impact exercise class to music to maintain, improve and prolong fitness and mobility. Suitable for those with some level of fitness. We aim to cater for all levels with adaptations offered in class. Science National Parks of Britain Wednesdays 13.30pm In the UK there are 15 members in the national park family, which are protected areas because of their beautiful countryside, wildlife and cultural heritage. The course will investigate 10 of these parks and will concentrate on the geological background and geographical processes which mould the individual landscapes as well as investigating the social and historical aspects of the selected parks and the prominent functional role tourism plays. Peter Nicol from the Northern Fruit Group has offered to run a half day apple tree grafting course. The method of grafting taught will be whip and tongue – suitable for all fruit trees. Rootstocks will be provided. The average number of grafted trees per person on a course is three and they cost £1.50 each. The number of people on the course is limited to 10. |
