Valentine's Day has come a long way from its probable origin as a Roman festival of fertility. And it wasn't always the schmaltz-laden retail opportunity it is now. As Sarah Peverley writes, the Feast of St Valentine was only a minor one of the 40 or 50 saints' days in the medieval calendar. This may have been something to do with the fact that, as
Laura Kalas Williams reports, in the Middle Ages, lovesickness wasn't a cause for celebration, but something you consulted your doctor about.
Students at the University of California Berkeley campus scored an enormous own goal recently when they protested against a planned speech by right-wing journalist Milo Yiannopoulos. Violence and intimidation prompted the university authorities to cancel, but Yiannopoulos is now a household name in the US. Eric Heinze says it's always better to challenge someone you disagree with than to "no-platform" them.
China is now a big player in world football. Among a host of other investors, Electrical company Suning is the majority shareholder in Inter Milan and businessman Jiang Zizhang owns the Spanish club Granada. For Simon Chadwick, it means keeping a closer eye on multiple ownerships and potential conflicts of interest.
