Some highlights of our meeting included approving $13,000 funding to Youth and Cultural Development Society Incorporated for its FRESH 2020 community project as part of our 2020/21 Discretionary Response Fund. Community Board grant for Kendo champOur board supported local student and Kendo enthusiast Sui Ellin on her Kendo tournament last month with a grant of $200 from our Youth Development Fund. Eels join whitebait to make splash in Woolston VillageEels and whitebait will be wriggling across Woolston Village, etched into new pavers to illustrate the cultural significance of the area. Plans progressing for final section of Coastal PathwayThe speed limit on Main Road, Redcliffs, could be lowered to 40km an hour as part of the multimillion-dollar project to complete the final section of Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway. The speed limit reduction is one of several proposed changes that Christchurch City Council is seeking community feedback on as it moves to finalise plans for the final section of the pathway, around Moncks Bay. New access card to support people with disabilitiesChristchurch City Council is partnering with the Hāpai Foundation to help eliminate the barriers faced by people with disabilities. Opawa on show for No Show DayOur board supported the Opawa Baptist Church to hold their No Show ‘Show’ on Show Day Friday 13 November. They received a grant of $1,710 from our Discretionary Response Fund. It was held as an alternative to the Canterbury Show and a chance for the community to come out as a family and enjoy free food, magician, bouncy castle, sports activities, face painting, bric-a-brac and more. Shared e-bike service rides into ChristchurchThe company that introduced shared electric scooters to Christchurch is now bringing its shared electric bikes to the city. Christchurch City Council has given Lime Technology a permit to operate up to 200 e-bikes in the city until the end of August 2021. Dome back on top of Thomas Edmonds Band RotundaAfter years sitting on the ground, tightly under wraps, the distinct copper sheathed dome of the Thomas Edmonds Band Rotunda is back in its rightful place. Smokefree areas to become vapefree tooAreas designated by Christchurch City Council as smokefree will soon become vapefree as well. The Council has voted to amend its Smokefree Public Places Policy to include vaping. This means that parks, playgrounds, bus shelters and the entrances to Council buildings and facilities will become both smokefree and vapefree. Water, protecting environment high on priority listCleaner waterways, a chlorine-free water supply, and a collaborative approach to creating a better environment are on the agenda for Councillor Pauline Cotter as she looks to the next 10 years in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.
