What had been billed as a close-run contest turned out to be a comfortable re-election run for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. While the election results were prone to manipulation, writes Leila Demarest, the overall result indicates that Buhari’s All Progressives’ Congress did in fact win. Buhari’s popularity in the north, voter apathy in the south and the opposition’s uninspired choice appear to have been the factors that sealed
his victory.
