Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s July 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume grew by 9.7% in July 2017 compared to July 2016--the strongest aggregate performance among imports since January 2017.
  • July’s strong performance pulls imports’ year-to-date trend from +0.3% through June to +1.6% through July.
  • The volume of beer imported from Mexico increased by 17.4% - Mexico’s strongest performance since September 2016. Mexican brands are now up 2.7% year-to-date through July.
  • Dutch imports also exceeded their year-to-date trend, growing 1.8% in July. They're now down 1.2% year-to-date.
  • Overall, European import volume declined by 7.6% in July and is now down 2.1% year-to-date.
  • Imports of NA beer were down 29% in July and are now down 10.5% year-to-date.
  • Cider imports were down 4.3% in July. Imports of ciders from France and Argentina saw large declines while ciders from Canada, Ireland, Sweden, and Spain saw large increases.

Exports

  • Exported beer volume was up 52% in July and is now up 17% year-to-date.
  • U.S. beer exports are growing in many areas throughout the world, but their strongest driver is South America. The volume of beer exported from the U.S. to South America has nearly doubled thus far in 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.
  • Exports of NA beer continue to grow very quickly. The majority of their growth is exports to Mexico and Japan.
  • Cider exports declined by 15% in July and are now flat year-to-date.
